Cakedaddy wrote: Tue Dec 05, 2023 5:54 pm New question. I don't normally seek headlines, news, etc. But I have been exposed to a handful of articles about OSU players leaving. I saw a list of 5 or so entering the portal with Harrison being a possible addition.

Obviously you'd miss Harrison. How impactful were the others, and is it true?
If you're hearing this because some TCUN fans are proclaiming "they broke OSU" then no, it isn't true.

Harrison is likely going to the NFL considering he's projected to be picked in the top 5. Now could someone offer him millions to play one more year of college? These days, yes. And in that case, it would make sense to transfer because OSU will definitely be breaking in a new QB next year. However, it'd take a lot of cash and with all the QBs heading to the draft, I'm not sure who will have a built team ready to go for next year that just needs a WR? Also, considering his dad is NFL rich, I'm not sure he needs the money. So where ever you heard that, take anything they report with a massive grain of salt going forward. If this cheating scandal has taught us anything, it's that TCUN beat reporters are completely full of shit and willing to say anything for clicks.

One of our backs, Miyan Williams, already declared for the draft and I expect Henderson will go to the NFL as well. Several other guys will declare as will half of your team. Why haven't any TCUN players declared yet? Because they're in the playoffs. Those teams don't have to declare for the draft or transfer until after they are eliminated/over.

However, is it true players are transferring? Yep. OSU has had 12 players enter the portal this cycle. Admittedly, that's a lot for us.

You can look, but the only names you will recognize are:
-Kyle McCord, our starting QB this year, is on the list. And since you didn't read my previous posts, he and/or his dad asked Day to declare Kyle QB1 for the 2024 season now or he would transfer. Day declined, just like he did with Quinn Ewers. Nobody with heart and a passion for the game makes a request like that. Kyle is why OSU got headlines, but he's hardly the only starting QB to transfer this cycle and as I stated earlier, ESPN has him as the 8th best of the transferring QBs, so what does that tell you? Lots of OSU fans are celebrating him leaving. Not just because he's pretty mid as a QB, but he lost the room when prior to The Game he said, "It's just another game" and then proceeded to throw two picks during it.
-Evan Pryor, our fourth or fifth string RB. He saw action late in games or due to injury, but that's it. He's a good back, but OSU has more 5 star RBs coming in, so he's got to move on to be seen.
-Julian Fleming, the #1 overall recruit in 2020. He's been a disappointment and completely overshadowed by lower ranked guys like Olave, Wilson, Harrison, etc. He has talent, but I'm guessing not the work ethic. We've got big name recruits waiting for their turn and another big 5 star heading in who ranks higher than Harrison.

The rest are all guys who never see the field, guys who didn't pan out, and people I've never even heard of.

Most guys transfer to get playing time rather than sit for four years. You cannot blame them. However, now guys transfer because they get offered money too (See Quinn Ewers and most SEC transfers)

As CBS sports points out:
Given that thousands of FBS players enter the portal each cycle and NIL has become a differentiating factor in player acquisition, expect to see plenty of movement this offseason in what has become one of the most important periods on the college football calendar.
TCUN, in fact, used the transfer portal to significantly bolster their own roster the last few seasons. They also saw a lot of players leave via it during Harbaugh's first few years.

Bama lost 20+ players to the portal last year.

This is college football now, and it's only going to get worse. Although, I could see the NCAA proposal for schools to pay kids directly ending the transfer portal as we know it now. Instead of letters of intent, they sign contracts...

BTW, OSU 5 star QB recruit, Air Noland, tweeted out immediately after McCord entered the portal that he is 100% committed to OSU.

No. These are random headlines on home pages that collect 'news'. I'm not on any sports message boards. I think it's one of those things were I clicked on a couple, and now I'm seeing more OSU or Michigan related 'stories'.

I did read your previous post and knew McCord was leaving. One story hinted that Harrison would follow him because they've played together since high school.

I asked the question because I don't normally read sports related stuff. So I have no idea who's legit. And even if it's on ESPN, I'd still question it. Plus, when they name the names, I don't know them, so again, that's why I asked if it was going to matter. I figured a lot of them were bench warmers looking for play time.

I also know we are going to lose a LOT next year. Half the team, the coach, etc. Sanctions affecting interest from the talent. Going to be a train wreck, I think.

You were losing a lot even without sanctions. Somehow you guys had a lot of 6th year seniors (Covid).

The sanctions will make things really interesting. Your entire coaching staff should be gone. However, they're currently still recruiting from the portal. I'm sure they're telling the kids nothing is going to happen so when it does, it will probably cause another mass exodus.

FYI, the word on Henderson is that he's coming back. Crazy.

Also, there's rumors he and Harrison have been offered big NIL deals to return to OSU instead of going to the draft. We'll see.

OSU is firing their QB coach (Corey Dennis) and letting their ST coach go (Parker Fleming). Also, Jim Knowles' name has been discussed for the Duke job although how serious Knowles' interest is in said job is up for debate.

They're saying former Buckeye LB James Laurinaitis will be promoted to a full time position (LB coach?) and former Buckeye QB Kenny Guiton is campaigning to take over as QB coach.

Yep. Apparently, their board has a meeting later this month and it is on the agenda.

There's been some breakdowns by financial people who say that it would cost FSU about $200M to leave, but they'd make over $200M in profit in the first 5 years with the B1G.

Drake Maye declares for the draft, will skip bowl. Our top WR is also skipping the bowl + going to the NFL. So much for dreams of a mayo bath (not Gordon style)

First context...

Raiola committed to OSU, then decommitted out of a crowded QB room, and went to GA. Now there's talk he's thinking of decommitting and going elsewhere.
GA fan discussing how to stop 5 star QB recruit Raiola from visiting Nebraska.

This is going to backfire on the players. It's inevitable. They're turning college into the semipro league that colleges never wanted to be. So colleges are going to respond as such.

Letters of intent are going to change to become legally binding contracts. You want to get paid? You're going to commit to playing here and only here. Want out and to transfer? Pay us back.

Colleges have the power to stop allowing players to transfer whenever they want and the players are giving it to them. You want to come play for us and get this NIL money? Fine, but you're signing this contract stating you are here until you graduate, you are eligible for the NFL Draft, or we release you.

There is no way colleges keep getting forced to give up more and more of their revenue and don't do something about it.

I'm guessing most NIL deals are structured as one year deals with options to renew to take into account the possible changes.
