Kung Fu Hustle

As long as we recognize Lucas is washed up and most TV sucks, we'll all get along fine.

I wanted to see this flick when it was still in theatres. The commercials made it look like a wacky Jackie Chan/Big Brawl-type slapsticky kung fu movie. But, you know how it is... when you have a wife with whom you share movie decisions, slapsticky-kung fu movies never win.

But I just watched it, and damn... it may be the best movie I've seen this year. There are indeed plenty of good laughs, but it's also an excellent story, and it's very stylish, as far as movies go, almost in a Moulin Rouge sort of way.

10/10.

I actually didn't care for the trailer I saw for it so I was prepared to hate it, which is odd cause it seems like my kinda movie usually. Finally saw it when the dvd was released and damn I loved every minute of it. Excellent flick all around, better action then most action movies and tons of laughs and good story too, what's not to love.

Interesting.

It's odd that this comes up now as someone else just told me this film was one of the worst movies ever made. I'll have to watch it this weekend and see whose kung fu film reviewing skills are more finely tuned.

& I still refuse to acknowledge that Nicole Kidman-drenched piece of shit as cinema.

Yup. It's highly likeable.

I think the music fight was my favorite bit. Although, even with the fighting in this movie being as great as it was, the costuming and set design was even better. Great stuff.

I agree.

Early on, bfore characters were revealing themselves, I had the thought, "You know, it makes sense that the gods would live in slums."

Somewhat amusing film about a couple dudes pretending to be Chinese gangsters. All well & good till someone calls them on it & the actual gangsters show up. Much fight choreography & a shitload of subtitles ensue. It was enjoyable, but not terribly memorable. Decent renter. Decent foreign flick. Decent comedic kung fu action.

Verdict : 2.5 stars.

Others would disagree with your assessment.

I fail to see what made this film get marks that high. It was alright. Any time I see a kung fu action/comedy, the immediate reaction is "No way it's as good as Jackie Chan's shit in the '70s."

Because there was a deeper story than your typical "Jackie Chan fights with wackiness."

You cannot challenge the awesomeness of 70s-garbed Landlord and Landlady. It is inviolate.
