Subway: Eat Halal
Rumors are circulating that 185 stores in the UK and Ireland removed all pork products and serve only Halal meat to appease strong Muslim demand.
Facebook and other social media is exploding with folks announcing their immediate boycott of Subway, so if you own stock in it, you might want to sell until this smooths over. Or buy now when it drops...?
Ok, maybe the number is only 2 stores, but why is their rep being so evasive?
They're a business, and should absolutely be allowed to alter their menus in certain regions where their customers might be a different demographic who doesn't like their primary menu. However, you'd think they'd be more prepared to answer the inevitable backlash because "You changed the menu at a restaurant I will never eat at to appease customers who actually will, and that offends me!"
I mean, remember the huge backlash against McDonald's for selling beer at some locations overseas?
Yeah...

I just recently tried Zoup and found them to be far superior.
Also, the Big Apple Deli on Woodville Road is the shit.

Never heard of Zoup.
A fan of the BAD. Been going there on and off for 20 years.
What this area needs badly is a few Jersey Mike's locations. I used to love the fuck out of those sammitches.
fake edit - I see they have a store opening in Gross Point, MI soon. May have to make a pilgrimage there.

It's a hell of a lot better than Quiznos. Bleargh.
I have tried Jersey Mike's a few times and have not been impressed. Still not as good as the mediocre offerings of Subway.
EDIT: I've never been disappointed by Jason's Deli

Here's my ranking:
Quiznos
Jimmy Johns
Subway
Jersey Mike
Jason's Deli
Schlotzsky’s
Miami Subs
Caveats:
Freshness matters. The Subway near my office that gets massive turnover is much better than the one near my house that does not. Same thing for Quiznos. I love one of their sandwiches (I prefer hot food to cold), but had it at a slow restaurant during dinner once and it was absolutely nasty. (Note: I've only ever tried this one sandwich at Quiznos).
Jason's Deli - Seemed overpriced and bland. But have only been there a few times. Might be confusing it with Schlotzsky’s.
I like Subway's bread selection. JJ only has 2 breads, iirc. Although their standard french bread is pretty solid.

It's not me, it's someone else.
I think I ranked Quiznos above Subway when we had them here. They're all gone now.
I don't remember Jimmy Johns being exceptional.
I did not like Schlotzsky's.
I haven't seen any of the rest.
If you're ever in our town, head to the Big Apple Deli. Get the 5 alarm chili if you like heat.

I'm probably only a medium when it comes to heat. I enjoy jalapenos on my sandwiches/nachos, etc... but that's my limit.
The main thing I like about JJ is the reasonably priced Gargantuan sandwich, which has a ton of meat on it, which is really what I care about most. They don't really have a diverse set of flavors (few bread selections, no sauces I'm aware of, etc), but it's simple and fast if you want a cold deli sandwich.

i used to love Quiznos, but like Leisher stated they have all closed up shop around here.
Subway, prolly some of the worst. Maybe i've just had too many of them over the years and my tastes have changed.
JJ's- not a big fan of the cold subs so not really my thing, but the BLT is my favorite here. Hope i don't get any bad lettuce
My personal favorite right now.. Firehouse subs! greasy and not alot of veggies just the way i like 'em!

WORLD CHAMPIONS!!
Once I eat carbs again, I'll try out Firehouse... we apparently have a lot of them around here.
I agree on the cold/hot. It's a major divide for me. I used to only like cold, then only liked hot, am now back to cold.
*edit* I'm a Katy Perry song.

Hot is good if you can eat it hot. Cold is good if you are buying it at 8am to eat it at noon on a job site. For every season turn, turn, turn...
I have had Firehouse once: it's distinctive characteristic is that inside they have a shelf of about 20 different hot sauces for your sammitch. Manly-fireman-type-thing.
The sandwich itself was.... not the best, but not the worst I've ever had. Of course, one cannot judge a place on a single visit.
I think if I have to pick my fav that is currently near me, Penn Station. Haven't seen that on anyones list.

Oh, yes, Schlotzsky's! I love their hot roast beef & cheese on sourdough bread. Delicious.
I've never had anything else on their menu. I want to, but every time I go I can't help but order that delicious roast beef & cheese again...
