I'd wonder if the extreme gamers wouldn't be the ones passing positive word of mouth about their favourite console to their buddies, though.

"Hardcore" is not a measure of a superior UI or graphics or whatever. It's a measure here of how much they spend. That adjective can be applied to almost any method of gaming. You have hardcore checkers players. You have hardcore Magic: the Gathering players. They are "the dudes in that particular market that tend to buy the most shit."
