If you have hope the next Alien film will be good, you'll lose it once you see this turd. Neil Blomkamp, who will direct and write that film, wrote (with his wife) and directed this Short Circuit rehash.
Let me start with the positive: Chappie looks cool.
Everything else is complete and utter shit. This thing could have been written by a 12 year old. The characters, the dialogue, the plot, and the actions of the characters are beyond terribly written. The holes in the logic of the film are large enough to drive Imperial Star Destroyers through.
Blomkamp writes about as well as James Cameron. Why Cameron? Let's play a game of "Name the Bad Guy":
Is the bad guy the abusive criminal who wields a gun, shoots innocents, steals, lies, etc. or the only military vet in the movie?
Blomkap's films have been getting progressively worse since District 9.

If you have hope the next Alien film will be good...
1) Never had any to begin with.
2) Can't be worse than Prometheus, Predators, or AvP: Requiem.
3) I mean, I guess it could, but hopefully it won't sink as low as Alien 3 or, god help us all, Alien: Resurrection.

Yeah, that pretty much covers it. This movie isn't what I was expecting. Like Shyamalan, Blomkamp seems to have had a few good ideas rattling around his head for years, and he is making films out of them in best ----> worst order, and he's got no more new ideas being generated.Leisher wrote:Let me start with the positive: Chappie looks cool.

At least that's what it feels like.
Maybe this movie was supposed to be the story as told from Chappie's perspective, which explains the childlike tone.
++++
And speaking for the universe, I hate it when someone has a system that really fixes a major problem in the world, then there's a hiccup, so they call it a failure and chuck it all.

That's kinda how I feel about most creatives. They've had their whole life to come up with some good/great ideas, refine them, improve them, etc. Band's debut albums. I've never understood the buzz for Blomkamp other than the fact that he's a huge liberal progressive so the press pushes him really hard. District 9 was decent, but no where approaching great sci-fi to me. Having it set in South Africa with obvious parallels to apartheid was just heavy handed and not creative at all.
Blomkamp's quality of work seems to following the same trajectory as Shyamalan's, but Shyamalan started at a much higher point with The Sixth Sense, so it took him longer to reach "suck". Blomkamp seems to have reached it after one.

That's an interesting theory.
I think you have a very solid point for most creatives. There are those who don't live up to your theory, but for the most part, you're right.
Also, in this case, I think Blomkamp makes incredible looking films, but his stories suck. There's a trend among creatives where they think they can do everything. You can't. Just because you can direct, doesn't mean you can write a good story. Just because you can code a game doesn't mean you can write a good story. Etc.

Sure, there's always exceptions, but it feels pretty true as a general rule.Leisher wrote:I think you have a very solid point for most creatives. There are those who don't live up to your theory, but for the most part, you're right.
I had a corollary about how comfortable life got (starving artist is more motivated to succeed, hard to write punk music as a millionaire, etc)... not sure how true that one is.
It's not me, it's someone else.
But that first album or first novel is in the vast majority of cases not the first they've done. Usually they've been toiling away making stuff that no one seems to want for years, until finally they get picked up for something good.
It may be better described as most creatives make a lot of stuff only some of which is good, but once they've got that first hit then they often get to publish the crap they wouldn't have been able to sell before. If they keep at it they may eventually get another awesome thing but by then no one is watching because of all the mediocre stuff they've done in the meantime.

You know what the fellow said – in Italy, for thirty years under the Borgias, they had warfare, terror, murder and bloodshed, but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci and the Renaissance. In Switzerland, they had brotherly love, they had five hundred years of democracy and peace – and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock.
