There's Something About Spoilers

As long as we recognize Lucas is washed up and most TV sucks, we'll all get along fine.

Gordon raises a good question: When is it ok to start discussing spoilers?

I think a few years back it would have been correct to assume it's ok to discuss a show a couple of years after the final episode, but is that still the case today?

However, we're now in the age of DVR, Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, VOD, etc. and people aren't watching shows "live" anymore.

Many people have started watching shows in spurts AFTER they've ended. The examples are countless, so we don't need to go into it, but how do we avoid things here?

I think the easiest solution is something Cake said: Avoid any threads related to a show you haven't watched, but plan to.

However, what if there are things you want to discuss with folks who haven't watched the show? Maybe you want to give a review or plug the show.

So I think it'd be a good idea to go forward by labeling threads you want anyone to be able to read as "Nameofshow *No Spoilers*".

Still keeping the *Spoilers Warning* tag as well of course.

The key here, and a few of you really need to pay attention to this: If it's a "No Spoilers" thread, you can't post fucking spoilers in it. Want an example of people trying to ruin a show for others? Go read the GoT "no spoilers" thread. It's nothing but spoilers...

That all being said, Rosebud is his sled and Bruce Willis is a ghost.

And that's my point. Damn near every 'no spoilers' thread has straight up spoilers in it. Some 'no spoilers' threads have more subtle spoilers "What's his name didn't renew his contract for season 3 of Walking Dead. So, we know what that must mean.". Or "In the comic, this happens." "In the book, that happens." "On this other message board, the theory is 'this'" Where, of course, 'this' theory was proposed by someone who read the damn books, so know, but are trying to play like they DIDN'T know so later people will say "Daaaaammmmn. Check out the big brain on Fucktard." Spoilers everywhere. Even after making strict "NO FUCKING SPOILERS IN NO SPOILERS" threads, I won't read them. Because someone will fucking post one. And ya, it does suck, because I would love to be able to talk about some shows that everyone is watching while things are still relevant and cool.

That's why with GOT I do what I do.... "acquire" the episodes as they air so I can be involved in the conversations when they are relevant. If you wait for the blu ray, you gonna get spoilered.

Dexter is an exception to what I usually do, which is what Cake mentioned... I typically don't read a thread at all unless I am caught up. I honestly thought everyone had watched the series, though, as everyone seemed to be in on the old conversations as I went back and read them years after they were started. My bad.

I don't recall any spoilers in the non-spoiler GOT thread that Leisher has mentioned twice. Examples?

Really?

Fuck that study in its ass.

How about personal fucking preference? I can think of a dozen iconic twists that would have sucked to know going into the movie.

I don't recall any spoilers in the non-spoiler GOT thread that Leisher has mentioned twice. Examples?

Without going back and exposing myself to more spoilers, I'd say that a large image posted showing people in Season 1 versus how they look in Season 4 is a massive spoiler. You know, because it's a show where "everybody dies". It's was quite boring watching assassination attempts on someone in Season 1 knowing they're alive in Season 4.

Really boosting the excitement in the scenes...seriously, fuck that study. Stupidest conclusion I've ever seen. Of course, people seem to enjoy the story more because you've removed all the suspense and they know everything is going to be ok. However, you've removed the journey for them. You've taken away the emotional roller coaster of the story. And how do you effectively and scientifically determine that Person X enjoyed a story more because he knew what was coming versus Person X experiencing it without spoilers?

Well.

I don't know how you can avoid that sort of thing... at any time you can read in the paper that actor X was picked up for season X.

Season 4 had some pretty serious "will he or wont he live" moments. I suggest you avoid the internet entirely until you see how that plays out. Seriously. It was fun waiting for that week to see who would die. Close the browser.

My job keeps me on computers all day. My hobby keeps them on it at night.

Yet somehow the only place I've had GoT spoiled is here in the no spoilers thread.

Ok, TNT did run ads for that new Sean Bean show, and while I don't know that he dies, I've assumed he's going to die since the show began. And honestly, nobody in the show deserves it more than he does.

One day we'll live in a world where we can all plug into The Source and get real time info about everything.

Until then, I'm liable to drop spoilers accidentally about almost anything.

I stopped playing the spoiler game back in the day when I used to videotape sporting events. Fucking walk by the wrong newspaper machine at the wrong time or overhear somebody somewhere say something. Unless you want to go through life blind and deaf, info will leak into your brain. If I'm unsure whether or not to waste 90 minutes on a film, I check on the plot summary on wikipedia or imdb. I've avoided some really shitty flicks that way, but I've checked out far more I would have otherwise dismissed.

The minor spoilers have never bothered me. Something like the 6th Sense ending would have bothered me, but usually they don't. I guess if it's a mystery I'd rather not know.

I think that study Malcolm posted is mostly true. If people really hated spoilers as much as they bitch about them, then why have so many books been adapted to movies. And "they made the story better by surprising me by changing it from the book" said no one ever.

It's one thing when a story you love comes to life. It's another when the surprise ending to something original is spoiled.

Or, if you never read the Game of Thrones books.

I still think in most cases people get more enjoyment out of bitching about spoilers than lose enjoyment from the actual spoilers.

Occurred to me one time that spoilers were good. The Crying Game.

If you couldn't figure that out by halfway through the film, then I don't know what to say.
