Call me crazy, but isn't this going to increase ticket sales?
This is the problem with activists, they put a spotlight on their target and expose it to a new audience. The Interview probably would have been a mild hit, but who doesn't want to see it now? People with zero interest or even knowledge of the movie now want to see it out of curiosity.

Yes, this will increase ticket sales some.
It's only a matter of time before one of these cases turns out to be the company distributing the movie to be the one behind the threats. I don't think that's happened yet, but it's only a matter of time. They'll call it Terror Marketing.

Cinemas pulling out.
Threats posted by the people who hacked Sony Pictures appear have had the desired effect. The Wall Street Journal and The Hollywood Reporter both state, based on anonymous sources, that the largest movie chains will not debut the movie next week. Carmike Cinemas said that it would not be showing the film, while the sources indicate they will be joined by AMC, Cinemark, Regal and Cineplex. In a statement to THR, Regal cited Sony Pictures' 'wavering support' for the film, as well as the threats, as the reason it decided to delay the film's opening.

If Sony had balls and wanted to strike back against the hackers, they'd release The Interview on VOD, Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, etc. on Christmas day for free as an apology to people over the hacking.

...we have decided not to move forward with the planned December 25 theatrical release...
Instead they'll release it one week later and sell a lot more tickets because of all of this.

EDIT: So far the commercials continue. There was one on the Daily Show tonight well after this announcement. And I saw another on YouTube. They aren't working very hard to stop telling everyone to go see this movie.
