Yahoo makes it a front page story.

Pretty disgusting to turn a father's mourning into a front page story to further a political agenda.

I get the man's anger, but really no gun killed his son. A mentally disturbed man did. What should really be getting investigated is why so many people were told this was about to happen, yet nobody did anything to stop it.

And if anyone really did want to argue the whole "this was because of guns bullshit":
Elliot Rodger, 22, the son of a Hollywood director, fatally stabbed three people in his apartment before shooting three people dead near the University of California at Santa Barbara.

Guess we have to ban knives too.

The more I read about this Rodger guy, the more I wish he hadn't killed himself so I could punch his whiney ass right in the face. If there's a better example of what we produce with all our "self esteem for doing nothing" culture, I'm hard pressed to find it.

There's not a brain in the head of anyone quoted in that article.

According to his family's attorney and a family friend, Rodger saw multiple therapists ever since he was eight years old and was a student at Santa Barbara City College, although the school later claimed he was no longer taking classes. The lawyer also said that Rodger was diagnosed with "highly functional Asperger syndrome" as a child.

On one online forum, Rodger stated that he opposed interracial dating and made several racist posts regarding African American, Hispanic, South Asian, and East Asian peoples, stating that seeing men of these ethnic groups socializing with white women "makes you want to quit life".

"I'm 22 years old and I'm still a virgin. I've never even kissed a girl. I've been through college for two and a half years, more than that actually, and I'm still a virgin. It has been very torturous. College is the time when everyone experiences those things such as sex and fun and pleasure. Within those years, I've had to rot in loneliness. It's not fair. You girls have never been attracted to me. I don't know why you girls aren't attracted to me, but I will punish you all for it. It's an injustice, a crime, because... I don't know what you don't see in me. I'm the perfect guy and yet you throw yourselves at these obnoxious men instead of me, the supreme gentleman."

Yeah. Totally a problem with the guns.

I've always thought it is important to play games with your kids starting at an early age and let them both win and lose in near equal numbers. It's important that they learn to win and lose with grace.

This kid was a punk that needed a foot up his ass most of his life most likely. That a 22 year old is crying about what's fair or not is mind blowing.

In a previous incident, Rodger "wrote that he tried to shove 'girls' at a party over a ledge, but he couldn't do it, and then men rushed to him and pushed him over". He stated that he "felt a snap in [his] ankle, followed by a stinging pain" and "tried to get away from there as fast as [he] could". Realizing that he left his Gucci sunglasses at the social gathering, Rodger returned to retrieve them but the "same people he had tangled with before began mocking him and calling him names, then dragged him into the driveway to beat him up".

Yeah, that worked real well. Simply because an ass-beating is warranted doesn't necessarily mean it does any good.

How many students watch outsized frat-boy fantasies like “Neighbors” and feel, as Rodger did, unjustly shut out of college life that should be full of “sex and fun and pleasure”? How many men, raised on a steady diet of Judd Apatow comedies in which the shlubby arrested adolescent always gets the girl, find that those happy endings constantly elude them and conclude, “It’s not fair”?

Are you shitting me?

Response.

That ass whooping occurred way too late to do any good. His introduction to not being a cry-baby and daily ass whoopings should have happened years prior to the deck incident.

On winning the lottery...
"I knew I was always destined for great things. This must be it! I was destined to be the winner of the highest lottery jackpot in existence. I knew right then and there that this jackpot was meant for me. Who else deserved such a victory? I had been through so much rejection, suffering, and injustice in my life, and this was to be my salvation. With my whole body filled with feverish hope, I spent $700 dollars on lottery tickets for this drawing. As I spent this money, I imagined all the amazing sex I would have with a beautiful model girlfriend I would have once I become a man of wealth."

Severe ass whoopings warranted.

I must've missed the scientific study which directly linked getting your ass beat to increased social empathy.

Ah, the ever elusive "right time." Physical punishment is not a guarantee of proper behaviour any more than it's a guarantee of extracting reliable info from someone.

I must be forgetting that golden era in American education when corporal punishment gave us high quality students.

Well, whatever Peter Rodger did as a father, it clearly wasn't correct.

I'd love to see the correlation between corporal punishment in schools and math and reading proficiency.

I would guess that whipping someone's ass might not make them learn any better, but the odds of the kid that needed the ass whooping preventing others from learning would probably drop.

I expect what's really needed is balance. Constantly beating a kid is not likely to have a positive result. Constantly coddling a kid is also not likely to have a positive result.

Some of our grandparents are examples of the former. Some of the current generation are examples of the latter.
