The planet on which Westeros exists was actually colonized 5k years in our future, 15k years in their past, by a massive asteroid colony ship from Earth. This ship on its orbit through their solar system is the red comet they see from time to time.

I made that up, btw. Original prediction for how the book will end. The last chapter will describe what I said and put the entire series in that context.
