I keep spacing out. I get focused on the wrong part of the board, hit the wrong arrow... and im stuck.
I heard a long time ago that you could tell who would be a good pilot by having them tap their finger repeatedly for as long as possible. The longer, the better.
I feel that's what this game turns into eventually.
The way I do it is to build towards a corner. I then try to NEVER move that corner piece, and it just gets bigger and bigger. The line that corner is in is responsible for growing the next #s. The next line over is then responsible for growing pieces to merge into the first line.
Ah, same approach I'm using now, just turned 90 degrees. My biggest piece is bottom left, going down in number to the right on that row. Then the second row up goes down in number to the left. Everything above that is just working space.
My main downfall is when you can't shift left or right or down and have to shift up, and suddenly my big piece has a 2 appear under it. And that 2 is impossible to get rid of and kills it.

Well ever since I started, I always tried to be smart. Got high score of 7000, got the 512 square. Read this thread and just started going down, left, down, left, like I'm playing Contra or something. With occasional opportunistic moves.
Best thing about this game, is once you win, if you don't click anything, it will reload that same "You win!" screen. I've gone back a few times just to look at it.
I haven't played since I won. But the thing that worked for me is to keep the corner the big #, then make sure every time you get #s bigger than 16, you combine them, or merge them, as fast as possible.
I ended up with around 35k points on that one I won.
