The Hunger Games Trilogy - Movies/books thread.

As long as we recognize Lucas is washed up and most TV sucks, we'll all get along fine.

There was a story called "The Lottery" by Shirley Jackson and it was about a lottery that chose which person was going to be killed that year and that's just like hunger games so omg hunger games is just so derivative of that. I don't ever need to watch movies because I can just read old books because movies just copy old books because there aren't any new ideas anyway.

Wow, someone's panties are in a bunch. I didn't realize we weren't allowed to throw warranted criticism at things you love.

Hey, let's play a fun game! Tell me who posted this:
Ok: Aliens vs. Avatar

Try to figure out which movie I am talking about:

- James Cameron Directed
- Sigourney Weaver
- Robotic exoskeletons
- C&C-Orca-Looking-gunships
- Evil corporation making bad decisions in spite of Sigourney Weaver's advice because no one believes her
- Hypersleep pods
- Movie title starts with an 'A'
- Mexican female dies in a big explosion
- Evil corporation putting money ahead of "doing the right thing"
- Movie climaxes with a person in a robotic exoskeleton going hand-to-hand with an alien over a young female

Weird. Seems like someone was criticizing a film for being a copy of another film...

So seriously, why has your attitude changed so much from the first post in this thread to now? I'm guessing you have a mad crush on Jennifer Lawrence.

Anyway, some copying or plagiarism is fine. Really. It's been said that all original art is just "undetected plagiarism". We all know Star Wars was an amalgam of things Lucas was copying. Tarrantino has gone on record multiple times as describing exactly who he was copying and hommaging with his films.

However, they're using multiple sources for inspiration, and acknowledging their work.

Copying directly from one source is why Shia is in so much shit.

My biggest problem with The Hunger Games has nothing to do with the product on screen (although it isn't awesome). My biggest problem is that Suzanne Collins denies even knowing about the existence of Battle Royale.

Here's a list of 35 things The Hunger Games "didn't copy" from Battle Royale. She might be slightly full of shit...

That list doesn't even mention the sectors gimmick or the fact that in Battle Royale II, the sole survivor of the first one (well, the guy) is thrown back into the game, and the government wants him dead! Sound familiar?

Look, imho there are simply way too many coincidences for this to be an original thought from her mind only. Sure, it's a possibility, but this many similarities so close together in recorded history? The odds have to be astronomical. I've seen it written that if The Hunger Games was an academic paper, it would have been stamped as plagiarism by those standards.

At best, she was high at an orgy and Battle Royale was playing in the background. Realistically, she lied from the start, and is being advised to never admit using anything from Battle Royale, even saying "it was an inspiration", for fear of a lawsuit.

I was not impressed. The plot is TERRIBLE. Know what's a great idea? Take that thing that you use to keep everyone in line, and completely undermine it! Brilliant!
I rented this to watch over the weekend. Couldn't get passed 30m or so before I got bored.

Rented the third Riddick, instead. I actually watched it and liked it.

I'll read the entirety of that post later.

My point was, I have literally seen the "battle royale" comparison a hundred times since the HG movie came out. It is time to retire that one. If you want to claim it is derivative, then use my example, "The Lottery." It has the advantages of making a person seem well read, and as far as I know, I was the first person to make the comparison, so it might be original.

Also, battle royale sucked.

Never saw Battle Royale (if it's a movie) or read it (if it's a book). Was entertained by the Hunger Games books.

All the cool stuff from the Harry Potter films were pretty much taken directly from Tolkien. They were still entertaining (if not entirely forgettable plot wise).

It's frustrating when you see someone take a good idea and execute it in a way that you find less appealing.

Like Brotherhood of The Wolf. That was horrible in the theaters. The DVD fixed so my ears weren't assaulted by all that French language (which I'm pretty sure all translated to "I surrender" over and over), and replaced it with English which made the movie quite awesome.

My point was,

So your point wasn't to be a smart ass and try to mock folks making the comparison between The Hunger Games and Battle Royale?

Weird how it shifted after you got called out for doing the same to another film.

I have literally seen the "battle royale" comparison a hundred times since the HG movie came out. It is time to retire that one.

Explain the logic here. We need to stop criticizing this movie for stealing from another movie because it's been done?

How many times must Shia's plagiarism be pointed out before the writing community overlooks it because it's "old news" and he can resume doing whatever the fuck it is he does without scorn and ridicule?

Never saw Battle Royale (if it's a movie) or read it (if it's a book).

Both.

It's frustrating when you see someone take a good idea and execute it in a way that you find less appealing.

I would agree with that, but that's not my issue with The Hunger Games. I enjoyed the first one despite its flaws. However, the second one is ass.

My issue is that it's basically a remake, yet the bitch who wrote it won't admit that she even knew Battle Royale exists. Had she admitted from the start that she got inspiration from foreign films, I'd have no issue with her. Although, I'd still call Catching Fire ass (it's the anti-Empire).

Also, battle royale sucked.

Now you're just being a hater.

Basically, this is Stubborn Gordon. Suzanne Collins could publicly admit today that she ripped off Battle Royale is every way, and he still wouldn't back down. Pretty sure he was a mule in a former life.

It wasn't the language which killed that movie for me.

Heh... I think I'm more pissed when they claim to be doing a remake and screw it up so bad they just ruin it (i.e. Robocop).

Makes Robocop remake look like The Godfather.

Despite the abominations that have been made (Rob Zombie's Halloween), at least the remake folks claim their work isn't totally their own from the start.

They're giving proper credit to those who came before them, and trying to add their own wrinkle.

Sometimes that wrinkle works well (John Carpenter's The Thing), sometimes not so much (The newest The Thing).

Number one in 2012. Lots of girls are going to get called "cat piss" on their first day of school in a few years.
