The League - Yay! Netflix

As long as we recognize Lucas is washed up and most TV sucks, we'll all get along fine.

An FX original series featuring a group of friends who participate in a fantasy football league.

Ok, if you're not a sports fan don't let that part scare you. While the show's constant theme is the fantasy football league, it could just as easily be about a poker league, golf league, video game league, etc. The real stories occur in the characters lives and how their obsession not only affects their day to day lives, but their futures as well.

Season 1 is only 6 or 7 episodes, but very much worth a purchase if you can find it for under $20. (I think I got it for $11-13 on Amazon during a sale.)

The casting is pretty solid, but the only face I recognized was the one guy who was on The West Wing. No clue about his name though...

Yes, there are hot chicks. In fact, this might be one to watch with your significant other if you can get her past the sports theme. Why? Well, they talk a lot about sex. One guy is hard up and his wife doesn't understand that her not putting out is ruining his life. Another guy's wife isn't into his interests and actively tries to squash them, and...it doesn't work out for her. A third guy's wife is the confident "I know my pussy keeps my guy happy and faithful" type that you wish was your wife or her most trusted adviser.

The guys are a good mix too. Two are lawyers (on opposite sides), one's a rich doctor, another is a unemployed pot head, and I have no idea what the last one does...

A cool aspect of the show is that there are three guys in their league that are "out of towners", which is cool when you consider what they could do with those guys. Add them to the overall cast, make them cool guest stars, etc.

Anyway, I think most everyone here will like it despite the sports theme. Check out an episode online or something.

I don't believe they ever say what Pete does besides having a desk job.

Rafi in season 2 is pretty awesome.

I can't decide if this or Archer is my current favorite show.

Did you figure out yet why I called you Ruxin?
Hint: It has to do with Geoffrey.

I am in the middle of season 3.

I don't get this group. They seem to actively despise each other. Yeah, I get the hanging out and ripping on each other like buddies do, but these guys go out of their way to fuck each other over in any way possible, be it their home lives, wives, girlfriends, business prospects, fucking with their money at their jobs, whatever. Yet they still get together for the game and are mean to each other some more.

In season 1 or 2 the plastic surgeon was cheating on The League with another league, and they were all genuinely nice to each other and seemed to enjoy each others company. I felt bad when the people who seem to hate him made him quit the group that liked him.

So, I don't understand why this group seems so tight. It is like a group of closeted masochists who actively avoid any possibility of having joy in their lives.

Can you give examples, because I honestly don't remember any of that?

I see why you'd come to the conclusion that they all despise each other, but I disagree. This is a group of friends who spend a LOT of time together. They know each others tricks, flaws, weaknesses, strengths, good qualities, bad qualities, stories, etc.

They do care about each other, and genuinely enjoy each other, but that level of familiarity breeds a form of contempt. Not even specifically focused at the other person for who they are, but because you don't bring anything new to them. They aren't impressed with you anymore or hanging on your every word.

(Lots of parallels can be made to marriage here...)

It's like when Ruxin starts to talk about having sex with his wife and they get grossed out. He says, "You used to love it when I talked about it." They respond by saying, "Yeah, but we've heard it so much, we're as sick of hearing about it, as you are having it."

Andre takes the brunt of the group's jokes, but they do care about him, and enjoy him. Look at the how Pete took him to the spa. Look at how they hate Rafi, and how Andre is an equal in any scenario where Rafi is involved.

I could go on and on. I consider this to be a more realistic depiction of long term friendship than most other shows where friends never get irritated with each other unless some crazy, whacky misunderstanding causes them to have a tiff.

And at the end of the day, it's a comedy. Do you honestly think a white plastic surgeon excited about his new partnership with a black plastic surgeon is going to throw a "Whites Only" (clothes) celebration party, and not get that people could misinterpret that?

By the way, those friends who "despise" him showed up and tried to help him avoid the misunderstanding.

If you watch the show carefully, each character actually causes their own problems, and the others are voyeurs to the ensuing train wreck.

Why does one guy look so much like Peter from Office Space, and another one of the guys looks so much like Angel from Angel?

So uh....

FX made a new channel, FXX, and my DirecTV package had it for like 2 weeks then moved it up to a higher package that I don't pay for, and the new season doesn't play on FX at all?

Are they doing the same to Bob's Burgers? My DVR isn't recording the new season.

Will they do the same to Archer?

I have a bad feeling about this.
