The average American woman weighs at 166.2 pounds, or 75.5 kilograms, far from the ideal weight for her average height of 5 feet, 3.8 inches tall, according to the Centers for Disease Control. Her ticket on Samoa Air, at the $1 a kilogram rate, would cost $75.50.

But let’s be honest here. The average American woman is at least 20 to 40 pounds overweight — and it’s costing her an extra $20 to $40.

Obesity being the leading killer among Americans, and the #1 reason our healthcare costs are skyrocketing (greed and government corruption/incompetence aren't tracked), perhaps this article should be taking a different slant than portraying obese people as victims?

A significant portion of my family is obese, in fact, one whole side could be both sides...diabetes is just something you deal with for those folks. I empathize with the struggle to maintain a health weight for a lot of people, but there are simply too many where obesity is caused by an unhealthy lifestyle that they simply refuse to change.

And I say that as someone who Wii Fit and the BMI considers obese.

They need a reason to. Their jobs don't require it, their home life doesn't require it. Working out takes money and time, two things that go out the window when you get married and have kids.

And I say that as someone who Wii Fit and the BMI considers obese.

BMI is complete, utter horseshit. I place it in the same bag of bad science as alchemy and phrenology. I guarantee you BMI would call me obese. I also guarantee I can outlift and outrun lots of people who aren't BMI-obese.

Bullshit. Lots of folks are simply fucking lazy. End of story.

I empathize with those who aren't, and can't afford to join gyms, don't have time to workout due to work/family/etc.

I was pointing out that I don't empathize with the lazy ones.

BMI is complete, utter horseshit.

I know. I can't stand it. I've had numerous doctors tell me to ignore it and simply go by what I see in the mirror. You know if you need to lose weight or not, you don't need a BMI to make you feel worse about yourself.

I think the BMI was created so we could all feel like teenage girls trying to look like the supermodels and celebrities they have marketed to them constantly.

As I recall from Penn and Teller...

BMI was created in the 19th century by a Belgian mathematician who gathered stats on people in general. He called this "social physics," which was stolen from the dude who founded modern sociology. No one gave much of a shit until the 1970s when some dumb-ass brought it into prominence. Said dumb-ass had his methods and experiments later questioned by his peers. Then the World Health Organization took it and ran with it.

I think "My soccer legs" is the gayest thing you've ever said here.
