That sound you just heard was nobody giving a shit.

Who cares if they won't get ads or bills on Saturday?

One argument is that around here the local post office is open 8-4:40, M-F. The actual times most peeps are at work. If they have to mail a package or do office bidness, and the PO isn't open on Saturday morning, then they need to take time off of work to do so.

Yeah, that is the bit that pisses me off. Saturday mornings are the only time I got to go to the PO without taking time off work.

And perhaps that's what the post office needs to be addressing? Stop being open at ridiculously inconvenient hours, and open up for the general public when they're available to come do business.

If I owned a restaurant, I wouldn't close during lunch and dinner hours...

Racist.

To me it is the big picture that is the most alarming.

Most peeps don't live in big cities. For most peeps in this country, there is only one post office nearby, and it is the only symbol of the federal government that they see in their daily lives. Yes, they do mail, but you can also get passport work done there and lots of other federal-type things. For most people, the local post office is the only evidence they have that Washington DC exists, aside from the IRS.

So now in 2013 we have a yearly federal government budget that eclipses the expenditures of any other government existing or historical, several times over... and yet they can't keep the post offices open, the one piece of evidence, for most people, that the federal government exists.

Want a sign of a receding empire? This is it.

That's a pretty big fucking "except." The reminder of how much they steal from your paycheck every time isn't easy to shake. How about everyone that goes by an airport?

I used the IRS as a specific example... it "takes away," but the post office is a symbol that their money is still being spent close to home. Now we just have the "take away" part.

Airports? I don't live with 40 miles of one that has a TSA employee, and I can't remember the last time I had to go to that side of town.
