You would think educated people well versed in the law would make excellent legislators...

No, I wouldn't. Why would anyone think that? What does education have to do with an inherent grasp of fairness, objectivity, and not being a greedy bastard?

Why can't it be both? I think the great majority of elected legislators are, objectively speaking, scum.
