Passes "Right to work" bills.

From the article:
By a 58-51 vote, the Republican-led House passed a bill that would ban workplace rules that make union membership a condition of employment for government workers. It then approved a second bill, covering private-sector workers, by a vote of 58-52.

and
The legislation would make Michigan — one of the most union-friendly states in the country — the 24th "right to work" state, making payment of union dues voluntary even though the union negotiates on a worker's behalf.

So can someone explain to me why 10,000 people showed up to protest the bill? What is the unions' argument against this legislation? How does this hurt the worker?

I have a feeling that a person who doesn't join the union in a heavily union shop is going to be assaulted worse than if he were a scab.

Hey, how bout that union violence!

http://www.foxnews.com/politic....ichigan

My wife gets up about 15 minutes before me every morning, and she turns on "Fox and Friends" (Think, GOOD MORNING, AMERICA for the republican crowd) so that ends up being what I listen to for a few minutes every day before I get out of bed.

Most mornings the peeps on that show just talk about the events of the previous day, point out the things that the other "news" channels refuse to acknowledge, and generally act outraged at everything liberal.

This morning... I was just waking up so it is a little fuzzy... I THINK it was the guy who got attacked by the union guy. I guess the police didn't bother arresting him or anything, because he wasn't in custody... the guy who got attacked was saying, "Here are the choices I am giving you... you like to sucker punch people like a loser... either turn yourself in and take responsibility for your crime and be arrested, or..." and I swear I am not making this up.... "MEET ME LIKE A MAN IN AN OCTOGON AND FIGHT ME UFC RULES."

I can appreciate insulting his manhood to get a rise out of a thug, but the pro-wrestling-schtick really made me cringe with embarrassment for the entire fox news network.

Maybe I actually dreamed it.

But you have to admit, he is on camera attacking the guy, and the police don't seem to care. Do the police have a union, too?

edit - I just learned the guy is supposedly a 'comedian,' so that would explain the "UFC STYLE" rant. I didn't pick up on the context of it as I was waking up. Ok.

Also, let's fire every one of these teachers and ban them from the industry, Reagan-style.

Classes were cancelled today in several Michigan school districts to accommodate the absence of hundreds of teachers, who were prompted by the union to call in “sick” to protest right-to-work legislation at the Michigan Capitol.

Police have unions.

And I agree with your teachers comment. I'm met around 532,730 women in my life. 500,000 of them were teachers or in school to become a teacher. Teachers are a dime a dozen.

Drop the hammer on those who think the children are less important than trying to stop workers from having the option of opting out of a union.

Seriously, who goes to protest to ability to opt out of paying dues?

Nobody has explained this yet, but what spin have the unions given this? How do they explain their position? The only thing I can come up with is, "If this passes, fewer people will join the union and if they do, they won't pay dues. That means, we'll have less power to represent you. This is their way of killing unions while making it seem like it's good for the worker."

Actually, if I were a union boss, I'd think that's a pretty good stance to push on my people to get them to protest on behalf of my salary...

The spin I've heard is more "now they'll fire all the union workers and hire replacements and we can't stop them thanks to this law, so all union workers are going to be out of jobs tomorrow".

That's horseshit, of course, but union workers aren't known for their ability to understand the economics of business.

That's a candidate for understatement of the decade.

By the way, I must have missed the news this morning, how many union workers were fired in Michigan thanks to these bills being passed yesterday?

How many union workers have lost their jobs in the 25 other states with this sort of legislation, and directly as a result of it?
