Dexter - Season 1

As long as we recognize Lucas is washed up and most TV sucks, we'll all get along fine.

Dexter is a blood forensics specialist working for the Miami police department who also happens to be a serial killer.

This fact is unknown to everyone in his life, including his co-workers, his sister, and his girlfriend.

The writing in this series is quite good. The dialogue is pretty realistic, particularly Dexter's own internal monologues. All the characters are realistically flawed, which adds a lot to the supporting cast. For example: Dexter's sister is really insecure and looks to men for affirmation, which goes back to her relationship with her father. Dexter's girlfriend suffered in an abusive relationship making her emotionally crippled, and thus, the perfect girlfriend for the emotionless Dexter. The only co-worker who suspects something is wrong with him has a secret that hasn't really been disclosed yet. Etc.

Also of note is how Dexter picks his victims, which is due to the "Code of Harry" referring to his adoptive father. You see, Dexter only kills those folks who deserve it. I won't go into it further to avoid spoilers, but it's a very interesting concept.

The first season plays out very well with one overriding plot surrounded by a large amount of sub-plots. The main plot being the search for a serial killer known as "The Ice Truck Killer" whose methods make Dexter jealous. (They are pretty cool.) Unfortunately, once the reveal is made, the story gets a touch soap opera-like. It's not enough to ruin the show by any means, but it's a stretch. It's entertaining, but it does depart a bit from the realities of actual serial killers.

The acting throughout is excellent, particularly Michael C. Hall (Dexter) who really does a lot with his facial expressions conveying an emotionless man who is pretending to have emotions.

This is a petty cool concept and definitely worth checking out. Be aware that the unedited DVD set doesn't shy away from the gore, language, or nudity.

1. Almost done with season 1.

2. I like how they manage to make a serial killer a likable protagonist.

3. Why do I find Dexter's sister so repulsive? There's just something about her that makes me hate her every time she is on screen, both physically and... not physically. I also find her personality very off-putting, but that quality usually doesn't matter to the "I'd still bang her" factor. I would NOT bang her.

I think his sister is supposed to be off putting. That's the point. She's a character who is struggling with her identity. She's still seeking acceptance from a dead father who gave her little attention compared to her brother, and she's trying to prove herself as a cop.

She's an absolute vortex of emotional issues. Meanwhile, her brother is the exact opposite.

The funny part is that they both have the same lust for catching bad guys. The difference is that's where her emotional hang ups end and his begin.

By the way, the second season is easily one of the best seasons of a TV show ever.

There's something wrong with her eyes. It feels like they don't fit her face right. Makes her look slightly off.
