The Average American Male - A book review

As long as we recognize Lucas is washed up and most TV sucks, we'll all get along fine.

I picked this book up out of curiosity because I stumbled across the internet ad of the guy and girl in bed and was curious. I originally thought the book was going to be something completely different and wanted to pick it up as I thought it might pertain to a project I've been working on.

What the book turned out to be is a story about an "average American male" who is bored with his current relationship and ponders if there is anything better for him.

Let me just say right up front that this book is about as crude as it gets. Cursing is damn near in every line of the book and the descriptions of what the main character is thinking usually involves some sort of sexual act. However, it really should be pointed out that this isn't your stereotypical "guy likes boobies" bullshit. There is a method to the madness here.

The author is really trying to portray how men think and what their ultimate goals are, and he does a decent job of getting there. Will it apply to every man? No, of course not. Is he dead on accurate about how the male mind works...he's close enough that this will resonate with the vast majority of men, but he does go a little over the top with it.

The offensiveness doesn't end there either. I believe a lot of women would be offended by this book. Not just for the realistic light in which he portrays them, but also because they will just REFUSE to believe that men think the way the main character does.

There are four women highlighted in the book that I remember offhand and of those four, none are what you'd call "perfect". Of course, that's realistic as there is no "perfect" person. What isn't realistic is the qualities the four have, in that, they are all a part of this story. I mean, they are all so vastly different and while some go through stereotypical behavior, other have not-so normal behavior for a woman, but that doesn't detract from the story at all.

The book reads rather quickly as each chapter is only a few pages long if even a page. I read it on a plane to Vegas and a friend read it on the way back.

Now you'll notice I'm not really discussing the plot at length, and that's because it's easily spoiled and I'd rather not do such a thing. I will say that the book flows very well and will have you feeling for the main character, maybe even envying him at some points. The ending is really good, but depressing. (You'll see.)

Your enjoyment of the book may vary depending on your own life experiences. In fact, I think married men will enjoy it more than single guys. Or, at least, single guys in their 20s or earlier. Like I said, based on your experiences...

Overall, I really enjoyed this book. I think it's a fantastic read for men as it's going to be like a trip down memory lane for some. For women, it's a good read if they actually are curious about how the male mind works. The key for them, however, is to understand that we don't take it as far as him, BUT we also aren't as tame as they may think or want us to be.

I'm going to avoid a "_out of 10_" score here and just say I highly recommend this book. It's perfect for this time of year as it's travel season.

The difference between men and women can be summed up in one simple observation:

Cosmo magazine: "Six ways to tell what he's REALLY thinking!"

Maxim magazine: "Whoa, look at those boobies! And beer!"
"Be bold, and mighty forces will come to your aid."

My wife never believes me when I tell her what I'm thinking, when she asks.

Heh. That's always fun. Especially right after sex or something, and she's all cuddling up to you and coyly asking "What are you thinking?"

"Oh, I was just wondering why the beer standard is a six pack. Why not eight? Or four? Why six? How did that get started?"

"Well, there was this video I saw on the internet of this girl who could lick her own clit. And I knew this guy in college that could suck his own dick. I was just thinking about what sort of percentage of guys would do that on a regular basis if they were able to, and how that percentage would stack up against the women's percentage."

"Just who DID put the bomp in the bomp-a-bomp-a-bomp? Because as far as I can tell Barry Mann made it up himself, so it turns into a bit of a silly question, don't you think?"

After awhile they stop asking.
