Cowboys & Aliens, the movie...

As long as we recognize Lucas is washed up and most TV sucks, we'll all get along fine.

I'll check out the graphic novel.

This sounds like one of those things that'll get fucked up.

Two years since this thread was started...

COWBOYS AND ALIENS a DreamWorks Priority?

The L.A. Times has a look at the newly revitalized DreamWorks. The studio had previously operated in conjunction with Universal Pictures as a distribution partner. Last year the two entities parted leaving Steven Spielberg to reform his outfit as a completely independent studio. Now they've secured the funding to achieve that and are looking to roll out a slate of films.

According to the article, the slow-brewing 'Cowboys and Aliens' is among four "priority projects". The film is based on the Platinum Studios graphic novel of the same name, which (very obviously) deals with cowboys in the old west repelling alien invaders. Robert Downey Jr. had previously been attached to star in the film. 'Star Trek', 'Transformers' and 'Fringe' golden boys Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman have written a script (along with 'Lost' mastermind Damon Lindelof).

The other three hot projects at DW are 'The 39 Clues,' 'Real Steel,' and 'Motorcade.'

Harrison Ford and Daniel Craig are in it.

Harrison Ford joins COWBOYS & ALIENS

A few days back we reported on a rumor which seemed to suggest a certain a-list actor may have just signed on to appear in Jon Favreau's next comic-based movie 'Cowboys & Aliens'.

Consider it a rumor no longer. Yesterday Favreau confirmed the news for his followers on Twitter writing, "Please stop asking if Harrison Ford is in 'Cowboys & Aliens.' Okay? He is. Please don't tell anybody."

It's hard to say exactly what role Ford will play in the film but don't go thumbing through the graphic novel looking for answers. While we've all been calling it an adaptation of the comic created by Platinum Studios (and published a few years back) word is that screenwriters Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci ('Star Trek') and Damon Lindeloff ('Lost') pretty much had free reign to completely reinvent the story for the big screen and discarded most of what's in the book.

Ford, normally the leading man in his films, will be in a supporting role to Daniel Craig, who is starring in the thing.

Cameras are expected to roll on the DreamWorks/Platinum production this summer with an eye towards a 2011 release.

And that pretty much assures I'm not spending $1 on this soon-to-be POS.

I saw this movie this past Saturday, and it was very good. It is the first western I've ever seen in the theater. I usually don't care for westerns, but this one with it's extra sci-fi thriller elements moved it just far enough into my interests to make it work.

Make no mistake, it is at it's core a western. You could just as easily take out the alien elements and substitute some bits and pieces of the civil war and get a movie with much the same plot and characters and events. But the sci-fi elements make it that much more interesting without altering the basic structure of the genre.

I approve.

This film sits squarely in the "didn't love it, didn't hate it" area for me.
