Truthfully, he should be disposable. Of course, that' sgoing on the assumption that Hollywood is filled with the best and brightest, which we know it isn't.
New Line is obviously the bad guy here since Jackson is suing them and they hoped he'd drop the suit in favor of getting money later for The Hobbit.
Ironically, this could be a great turn of events for Jackson. Not only can his lawyers use this action action New Line is the suit Jackson has already filed, but if someone else comes along and makes a horrible movie with The Hobbit, he'll look even better in the public's eyes and could command a higher salary if New Line begs him to come back and make a LOTR prequel.

I'd say at least HALF of what made the LotR movies so good was the non-directorial stuff that was done... the hundreds of blacksmiths making armor, custom-made, "middle-earth-looking" cups and silverware and stuff, etc.
