House has earned my respect

As long as we recognize Lucas is washed up and most TV sucks, we'll all get along fine.

W\ this line alone :
[Some doctor is hitting on a chick at a party. House approaches him & drives off the chick to get the doctor's opinion about a case.]
some doctor : Well, you could've just told me you had a case. You didn't have to screw me over.
House : Yeah, but if I didn't screw you over, you'd be thinking about getting laid all night, and then you wouldn't be any use to me.

Kudos to whatever channel that is (USA?) that's running the House marathon.

Yea, it's USA. It made finishing writing my tech docs somewhat not suck as much. & perhaps the finest quote I've heard on TV this decade ...

Patient : I got the plague?
House : Yeah, but don't worry. It's treatable. Being a bitch, though, nothing we can do about that.

Ok, so I'm in disk 2 of my House: Season 1 dvd set.

I'm seeing a trend, here.

1. Someone tricks House into taking on a patient.
2. House says the diagnosis isn't what everyone thinks.
3. Everyone says "But that's not the right treatment for X!" House tells them to do it anyway.
4. House has a hilarious moment with a patient int he clinic.
5. Patient gets worse because of the treatment, but House notices something else completely and tries a different idea.
6. House argues with the hospital administrator.
7. House has another hilarious moment in the clinic, but someone makes a comment... which provides House with a leap of logic.
8. House comes out of fucking nowhere with the correct diagnosis of some condition that only 20 people have had since the beginning of time.

But still a good show, so far. I can see this formula losing its entertainment value, eventually. Hopefully it is just a "finding our audience in the first season" thing.

I'll attempt to deconstruct the everyplot when it comes 'round in my 'Flix queue.

Yeah, it's pretty formulaic, but as long as the writers give Hugh Laurie at least one cynical wisecrack per show, I'll keep watching.

They try to provide personal-life subplots, but it's pretty much a templated show.

Nope, that's pretty much it through most of the seasons. There are a few that are more complex, but even those will have at least half of these elements you've listed.

Hasn't gotten old, yet, though. The cast and dialogue are outstanding enough that they can carry that basic plot through many years of entertaining episodes.

One thing that bugs me is that over and over, they start treating the wrong illness.... and they almost always tell the parents/spouse/whatever that "This IS what they have, and this medicine WILL make them better."

Then they look stupid when the first 3 things don't work.

Personally, I appreciate an honest shot in the dark from a doctor than to be told over and over again "this will cure it."

I've been there, and I speak from experience.

Especially when the parents/spouse/whatever says, "But I thought you told me he had (whatever)!"

I tell myself that the TV show only covers the cases where it takes a few tries; the rest of the time, a patient comes in with a mystery disease, House says it's X, they treat him and he goes home and lives to be 100.

Keep in mind that they only call in house and his crew when the illness falls outside the norms anyway.

It's never Wagner's. It's never Lyme disease. But it always could be.

Well now we're in the episodes with the big new rich boss who bought his way in. Now it's getting interesting.

Don't spoil anything. 1 disk left in season 1.

Goddammit, season 2 ended on a cliffhanger.

Anyone know when the season 3 dvds come out?

No idea.

Just wait until you get to the Season 3 cliffhanger. It's even hangier.

It's almost like Battlestar Gallactica except in New Jersey in a hospital and there's no spaceships.
