I also, as this thread shows, stopped caring if she doesn't take care of herself. Because I can't control her, so why anguish over it.

She knows the line. When she crosses it... or if she goes crazy like she did before she moved in... she's going into that cheap nursing home that she can just barely afford, which is way suckier than the cush life she has here. She has been given the rope and she is fashioning the noose.
How un-progressive of you. Don't you realize that as a non-contributing member of your household her needs are the only ones that matter? Stop oppressing her you monster!

She cannot function. Functional people, when left to their own devices, do not take an active hand in killing themselves. If none of the three people in this equation care, then oh well. But in that case, it seems inhumane to drag the process out until it reaches a slow, painful crescendo during dialysis.

She has her appointment with the new doctor in 5 days. I and her two children will be talking with him privately, saying she needs a serious psyche eval, for exactly that self destructive behavior. Under the miracle of Obamacare this shit isn't easy to come by.

I think she lied about her blood sugar level tonight.

We had parent/teacher conferences so we told her to make her own dinner, there is hamburger, cube steaks, eggs, bacon, whatever she wants in the fridge ready to cook.

Instead when we get home she is eating chocolate chip pancakes. We've told her not to make those... recently... but what the fuck ever. So we just took our official guesses at her nightly blood sugar level... we are getting pretty good at it. I guessed 296, the wife guessed 318, Will guessed 297 because he's a jerk.

She comes out and says, "228." I said bullshit, show me the tester. "I already turned it off."

Uh huh. I'm guessing 328.

Even her lie sucks. 220s is still too goddamn high by a lot.

Last night:

"I don't think I am supposed to test my blood sugar every night."

"Yes you are, we test it every night and then you take your insulin."

"No, my doctor said I only need to test it when I am feeling like it is low. I never test it every night."

She has tested every night for at least a year...

"You are remembering wrong. You check it every night, we write it down, then you take insulin. Doctor's orders."

"No. I haven't been checking it."

"Well then how do you explain this log of your blood sugar levels for the last few weeks?" And I hold up the notebook.

She squints at it...

"No, I don't need to check it every night."

Ugh.

Then later, after conversations like that, she is literally crying on the phone to her old, 85 year old neighbor about how I yell at her for no reason. Thing is... when I yell, it sinks in and she remembers. How bout that.

Me: "Hey, remember when you moved in here you agreed to follow my directions regarding your diet and medications?"

Her: "No, I never would have agreed to that."

Sigh.

How many days until that one flies over her particular cuckoo's nest?

Start asking her what the wife gets when she dies. Ask her all the time. Ride her ass about making sure you guys get the good stuff when she roaches out. Don't be mean about it. Be casual and light hearted like you really don't care. I know she doesn't have much, but act interested anyway.

I think piercing pain and a very public implosion of bullshit is the only thing that will help.

I thought the doctor today was a general care... He is a diabetes specialist, so won't do anything about putting her away for a while. He did tell her her blood sugar was way too high though and gave her another kind on insulin.

I hate how sweet and polite she around people she doesn't live with.

I picked up a bunch of lunch meats and bread and cheeses for a deli night for dinner, tonight.

We noticed she only put one slice of baloney on some bread, and she was done. The wife says, "You know we have ham and turkey and salami and other stuff, here."

MIL says, "I don't mix meats."

News to us.

Has that evaluation granted you anymore legal leverage over her or made a goddamn bit of difference?

Nope. Being a selfish bitch isn't enough to have her committed... Yet.
