How many cars have you owned?

Post by TheCatt »

It's a bit tricky if you're married, but I'm not counting the wife my car primarily drives, for instance.
It's not me, it's someone else.

I got a car when I turned 16... drove it until it died (it leaked oil, but the oil indicator light never went off), and got my current car 11 years after I got the first one. Been driving it for 15 years now.
It's not me, it's someone else.

I drive them until the wheels fall off, but get them often with one foot already in the grave. Have had 6 total, but three of those were from high school until I finished school and involved some inter family swapping. Started with a pickup that my dad ended up with for use at his trailer court and I got the van which I ended up trading to my BIL because he was an RF enthusiast and there wasn't room in his Camero for the planes.

1. Chevy Chevette (used, died soon after)
2. Chevy Chevette (beginning to suspect dad hated me) (used, died soon after)
3. Ford Probe (used, died soon after)

This is why I swore off used cars for a long time.

4. Ford Probe (new, last year's model closeout)

*married*

5. Ford Ranger (new - relatives work at Ford, major discounts... paid it off, then some young girl t-boned it and totaled it)
6. Trans Am (new, because I always wanted one)
7. Ford Escort wagon (new - relatives work at Ford, major discounts)

*kid*

7. Ford Taurus X (leased - relatives work at Ford, major discounts)
8. Ford Flex (new - relatives work at Ford, major discounts)
9. Dodge Ram pickup, used. (Trans Am turned 10, things started going out... like wiring and tranny) (Had all kinds of problems that weren't immediately apparent, got rid of it after 3 months. Reinforced my "never buy used" mentality.)
9. Ford F-150 (new - relatives work at Ford, major discounts)
10. Ford Escape (new - relatives work at Ford, major discounts)

It feels like I am forgetting one or two in there, but that takes me over 9.

Was asking about your cars, but personal life is fine, too.

So when you get all those Ford cars, do you sell them and basically not lose much money?

My cars:
90 Honda Civic: New. Took it off-roading more than 98% of all SUVs.
99 Toyota Camry: 2 years Used, but bought it from my parents, so I knew the owner. Been a very reliable, consistent car. After 17 years, no major issues (knocks on wood), but I only drive about 5k miles per year in this car. (Short commute, sometimes bike, sometimes Work From Home; Wife's car for any real trips)
It's not me, it's someone else.

3. used Camero (50k miles), more than I should have paid, lasted two years
4. used Ford hatchback (40k miles), reasonably priced, lasted five years
5. used Subaru station wagon (250k+ miles), free, lasted four years
6. used Saturn hatchback (60k miles), a bit too pricey, lasted eight months
7. new Hyundai Accent, new car pricing (ugh), sold after five years
8. used Smart Fortwo (7,041 miles), fair price, still have after seven years

Oh, then take 2 cars off my list, if we aren't counting wife cars. But my name was still on the loan. Still 8 or 9.
