Star Trek Beyond

As long as we recognize Lucas is washed up and most TV sucks, we'll all get along fine.

A very, very broad summary of what the story will be about.

Off the top of my head, I can't remember if they've done a story like this before?

If you go back and look I've maintained that the new movies have been a purposeful deconstruction of the originals since the first one came out. Now they're even using the word themselves. From the start they've been intentionally turning every element of the original vision on it's head.

All those "coincidences" in the first movies that seemed to mirror the originals but in a wrong sort of way? All that was on purpose, not just badly done fan service. They're intentionally trolling the purists.

I figured it was a tribute to Takei... Takei doesn't love it

I have faith in Lin putting out a good movie, regardless.

Simon Pegg counters Takei.

Pegg might be right, but there's an equal chance he's wrong. Gene might have hated the gays. We don't and won't know. All Pegg is doing is speculating and assigning viewpoints to a man who is no longer here to state his own opinion.

One quote from the Takei article really stands out to me:
Cho called Takei to tell him about the move, and Takei tried to explain his misgivings. “I told him, ‘Be imaginative and create a character who has a history of being gay, rather than Sulu, who had been straight all this time, suddenly being revealed as being closeted.’”
I couldn't agree with Takei more. I wonder if he realizes he just contradicted himself when he supported changes to characters in other major franchises?

I can see both sides. At the end of the day, I don't really care if they're gay or not, as long as it doesn't mean penises on the screen.

Yes, I didn't bother looking it up.
