I'm thinking like 4 or 5 hens for eggs, and to give the kid a chore.... feeding the chickens every day before school, and collect the eggs.

I'm thinking of just getting this coop kit:

Probably not that exact one, but like it. Yeah I could build one on my own, but why bother when I can just do this.

If you're having Will do it, you might want to look for a design where the eggs roll down away from the birds automatically since chickens can be ill-tempered and are made of muscles and sharp bits. Checking around for a docile breed would be good too.

Seems like something you'd want to discuss with your wife, as well. Chickens shit anywhere and gashes becoming infected could be an issue.
