upcoming flicks

As long as we recognize Lucas is washed up and most TV sucks, we'll all get along fine.

As is to be expected, there's probably nothing in the theatre worth seeing till summer or so.

Here's a list of some of the more imminent releases :

Big Momma's House 2
When A Stranger Calls (crappy-ass remake)
Final Destination 3
Dr. Doolittle 3

I'll certainly add Underworld : Evolution to that list, though some will disagree.

How can anyone say Hollywood is out of ideas???

When A Stranger Calls had better be good since it's based on one of the best scenes in horror film history.

Yes, I know it'll suck.

Underworld was better then I expected, so I'm willing to give the sequel a chance.

I've seen the previews on TV. I've seen what used to be a classic sequence diluted into phoned-in lines & expressions. Yes, they show the interesting part of that scene during the fucking preview.

I'm surprised they aren't remaking The Hitcher or Night of the Hunter. Those are some quality flicks they could still butcher.

After thinking about this for a spell, I've come to the conclusion that Hollywood isn't out of ideas. They've changed their biz over the years.

They used to be interested in making entertaining or thought-provoking flicks. If you watch the special features in "Eraserhead" you get to see David Lynch rather pissed off at what the ultra-uber-r33t American film school he went to was trying to push on him. He hated it & dropped out. His prof asked him his reason & what it'd take to get him back. Lynch said, "I want to make Eraserhead." So his prof went to bat for him, got him some cash & credibility & he started making it. Lynch sends a cut to the suits that run the school & they all universally despised it. Their response was, "This isn't the sort of film we should be making." Lynch's prof was also in the room & replied, "This is EXACTLY the sort of film we should be making." The admins stopped giving Lynch assistance. Lynch's prof tendered his resignation over this matter.

Hollywood doesn't want entertaining or thought-provoking anymore. They don't want the next Stalag 17 or Frenzy or Chinatown. They want crap like Spiderman 3, Transporter 2, and Lord of War. Why? Cos they TURN A PROFIT. There's little if any script, directing talent, acting talent (at least talent that gets used), or anything besides special effects & overused gimmicks. But they still make cash. Why was Equilibrium one of the best flicks that no one had ever heard of till months after its initial release? Not enough explosions, not enough fucking, not enough seizure-camera movements, not enough car chases in outer space as a star's about to go fucking supernova while the governor of Earth is held captive by evil corporate CEOs seeking to cut down the rainforests, cause global warming, & hunt whales to extinction.

If you don't believe me, check this shit :

Box office info for Equilibrium.

Cost about $20M to make. $5M gross world wide, though it did turn a profit thanks to overseas rights.

Box office info the Deuce Bigalow : European Gigalo. $22M to make. Gross in U.S. alone was about $150M.

While one of these films is obviously more entertaining & made in a superior fashion & the other is a tired rehashing of a concept that was only funny for about three seconds in the first place, picture yourself a Hollywood exec. Two screenplays are on his desk. One of them is the next Equilibrium & the other is "Saw 3." Do you take a chance on a director you've never heard of w\ a script by people who've not turned out a major money-making flick or do you decide to back the franchise w\ the already-established customer base that'll see a flick regardless of its quality just cos it's got the name "Saw" in the title?

These sorta flicks keep getting churned out because people pay to see them. "Hostel" (written by a hack) is almost sure to turn a profit cos it's got the phrase "Quentin Tarantino presents" in the preview. I virtually guarantee a POS film, though.

You're blaming a biz for giving consumers what they want. How do I know they want it? Cos they're freely paying weekend after weekend to see the same shit.

Exactly why my wife and I never go to movies anymore. She wants to go, I put up a fight and challenge her to come up with a good one to see for $10. She lists them and I give a handful of dumb questions about it and she realizes that yes, the movie really is stupid and probably can wait until a $2.99 Hollywood video rental night. Since movies are coming out to DVD\video quite quickly now (less than 6 months for some) there's no reason to waste time and money watching it in a theatre with the noisy people and cramped sticky conditions.

And I've never heard of Equilibrium before, but that's probably because I never pay attention to what Hollywood or move studios in general are putting out. The last movie I actively sought out to see in theatres (rathert than just caving to the wife) was "End Of The Century."
