I didn't get as far as Catt, but eventually I transferred almost all my gilds to Frostleaf and didn't level up anyone else but him except for the bare minimum needed to get the skills. That seemed to be a good strategy.

You get a randomly Gilded hero at 100 and then every 10 levels after that. The Gild gives them a new look and +50% damage.

I have read you're supposed to put all your Gilds on Treebeast and a few other early heroes until they're level 500 and you're one hitting everything. At that point you're supposed to move them to the Samurai chick until 2500, again until you're one hitting everything to that point. Then you're supposed to move them to Atlas, and then Terra, and so on.
I assume they don't mean every ascension because that would be ridiculously inefficient and expensive?

I don't remember what level I was at, but when I started a new ascension I was almost immediately able to get Frostleaf and skip all those lesser heroes entirely.

So you no longer level them? Do you leave them at 0?

Just enough levels on other heroes to get the activated skills and no more. Only the activated skills selected, not any of the other upgrades on the heroes; Frostleaf is doing all the damage. Frostleaf has all the gilds. I have purchased all the ancients and maxed out those that have a max. The rest I've been putting a pretty even split into both the non-click and the click ones. I let it non-click up until it slows down, then switch to click until that's not pushing up fast enough anymore either, then ascend.
I don't know if this is the "right" way to do it, but it seems pretty good so far. But then I'm nowhere near as far as Catt.

5K is the highest I've seen someone say they were at, but I haven't looked a lot.
If you're online, join a clan to fight the titan things or whatever they're called. I'm in a clan called Trance Click which is a random clan I joined with a bunch of folks around my level. I've heard that if you created a clan and brought me in, you could essentially eliminate all my building time and get me on par with you almost immediately. That's tempting, but I really want to hit that level on my own.
I was clearly not paying attention to the math. I thought it was a very straight forward, next guy is the best until the next guy formula.

If anyone joins the Steam version, I can join a clan over there. That account I'm MUCH farther in the game. I'm right at lvl 2k, so I wouldn't mind teaming up with higher or lower level folks.
If fact, I've got 100 gems, so I could start a clan there if need be.

This is generally mostly true, but there are exceptions. Frostleaf is one of the stronger heroes in terms of DPS per level cost and King Midas is one of the weakest. Add on top of that an absurd number of gilds on Frostleaf and he can beat DPS per cost compared to the heroes that follow him up to about level 4000. It turns out once he's passed that I should be switching to the one furthest down that I can then afford (which I believe is Alabaster).
It's all due to those powers of 10. If you get a chance to double your damage it's got to be cheap to be worth it, because doubling is nothing at all compared to the exponential progression of the levels. So skip anything you don't have to pay for that doesn't have a big return; there's more powerful things down the list to spend it on instead.

I downloaded this game the other day. got to like level 25 which I'm sure barely even scratches the surface of the game. Didn't even have to ever click really, just bought the dudes that gave me the most DPS and watched them die.
Not really sure what the appeal to this game is, but my 20 month old son sure likes watching it.
