Most dealers are lying to you and trying to steer you towards things you don't need or want.

Think about it.

They're selling you a car and there's only so much they can make in profit off that car even without employee discounts. So they have to be creative to try and increase their profits. Unfortunately, that means selling you stuff you didn't come in for and stuff you probably don't need.

That's where Saturn was awesome. Here's the price and you either buy it or you don't. No other "up sells".

They did sneak in $800 worth of "Enviroseal." Apparently now if I spill coffee on the seats it won't stain. I saw it but let it slide.

It's the undercoating thing all over again.

No other "up sells".

Kind of hard to upsell a POS.

I'd be wondering if Ford was even offering these great trade in incentives at this point or if the dealership just didn't want their mechanics tied up doing them? I'd be checking w/ Ford on that.

Good question, but it's all the same to me either way, at this point. We now have the financing we wanted and invoice price minus $4500 in total rebates. I'll take it and run.

Went in this evening to sign the new papers.

They seemed adequately contrite and didn't cop attitudes. It was civil all around.

This is why I still kind of like these particular guys. They do what they have to do but I didn't get fucked so I have no reason to be mad.

If I go have dinner with a guy and he tries to stick his finger in my ass, I'm not going to go have dinner with him again just because I was able to stop him the first time around.

I'm with Vince.

I mean, assuming fingers in my ass is a bad thing.
It's not me, it's someone else.

He'd have to be one charming mother fucker. At which point, the whole finger in the ass thing might be a moot point.

Follow up:

We had paid in advance to get the remote car starter put in, and we were going to pay $150 on install day to also get an internal cargo cover.

While in the waiting room our salesman popped in, sat for a few minutes and we shot the shit.

When the car was done and I went to pay, they told me "Fuggedaboutit, we took care of the $150."

So apparently they're pretty cool.

"Fuggedaboutit, we took care of the $150."

In some cases, not saying yours, that translates as "We've made so much money on you that we feel bad taking any more."

I only buy used cars now. There's a dealership in Bryan, Ohio that gets turned in leased and rental cars. They have low mileage, are typically only a year old, and 90% of their original warranty for half the price.

I keep remembering the Seinfeld where Jerry's trying to buy a car from Puddy.

Shopping at a "only former leases" place may be better, but

every

single

time

I have purchased a used car, it needed major work within a month because I had purchased someone elses problems. Four times that I can remember. So fuck that, i buy new.

I don't blame you for any decision in this thread. People should stick to what experience has taught them to trust until they learn otherwise.

Word to that.

That reminds me, I think my mom bought a BMW or something at that "leases only" place. They told her the previous owner was an old lady and it only had 25k miles and she figured it was a good deal.

When they identified why the engine died two weeks later, the mechanics estimated that the oil had NEVER been changed.

The old lady didn't see the point of paying for oil changes when she knew she'd be trading the car in scot free in 2 years.

Used to play fantasy football with a master mechanic. He told me about all the vehicles he'd seen that had dry dipsticks. Just goddamn.

I once bought a car from someone who said it was owned by a "little old lady that drove it to church, the grocery store, and home." Engine died a couple months later.
