Last year, early Fall, when there was the first frost in the forecast, I went out for one last trip through the garden to pick the stragglers before they froze. Turned out I had about 40 jalapeno peppers and about 10 large banana peppers. I made a big pot of chili and still had a couple dozen peppers left, so I decided to try to make jalapeno poppers for the first time.

Long story short, I had a bit of extra cheese blend left once all the jalapenos were stuffed, so as an experiment I did a banana pepper popper, too. I froze them like 5-6 per baggie so I had several individual servings.... no one else in this house will eat them because they're all assholes.

I ate the banana pepper batch tonight.

I think it is better than the regular poppers. My jalapenos crossed with my habaneros, so about 1 in 4 is just tear-inducingly hot.... so you almost wince when you bite into a new one, not knowing what you are going to get.

But the banana pepper is just mild and has good flavor and turns it into a spicy cheese bite instead of vaguely-cheese-tasting-burning flavor of one of those jalapeno/habaneros.

So fuck it, this year I'll be going 50/50 on these poppers.

Fascinating shit, eh?
