Convoy - At 'Dem Flicks with Malcolm

As long as we recognize Lucas is washed up and most TV sucks, we'll all get along fine.

Synopsis:

Sam Peckinpah, the Warren Zevon of films, valiantly tries to direct another movie while being absolutely blitzed.

Review:

Kris Kristofferson and Rocky's brother-in-law (Burt Young) lead a convoy of trucks and make Ernest Borgnine crash a lot. Borgnine plays a greedy, corrupt, racist cop that enjoys robbing people under the guise of public safety in addition to giving them worthless traffic offenses. Not much has changed in 40 years.

True story: Most of the time Sam Peckinpah was too drunk in his trailer to be bothered with real directing duties, so what you see is a big dose of James Coburn. James does a hell of a job mimicking Sam's style, meaning copious amounts of slow motion when things are falling or being shot. Kris is driving a truck full of explosive chemicals. I swear to jeebus the last 10 minutes of this movie was 10 seconds of actual time ... like an NBA game. Not since Inception has time plodded along so sluggishly on film.

You'll spend most of your time wondering how the hell this movie ever got made. Also note that it suffers from Oliver Stone syndrome. One character will yell out something so painfully obvious you won't remember the last time you were condescended to that badly since grade school.

Verdict:

Drinking game:

1) Take a drink every time the word "convoy" is spoken.
2) During a slow motion shot, you must take a drink every ten seconds.
3) Take a drink every time you look at Burt Young and think this is actually what his character did before Rocky.

I haven't seen that movie in over 30 years, but wasn't there a guy named Spider Mike and his lady was gonna pop and he got caught by the cops and beat up?

I remember that movie. I think I've seen it like four times over the years.

Not great, but a fun background movie.

I always felt bad for Spider Mike.
