ProtonVPN I lose a decent amount of speed. Surfingwise, it's not very noticeable. But p2p it seems to max out around 50Mbps.

I recently switched to ExpressVPN. I was going to switch to NordVPN, but they do not support split tunneling, which I need due to local network access.
Both do have application-level kill switches, which is nice. ProtonVPN did not have that.

I've literally never heard of the first two, which makes me think they are FBI/CIA plants.
I use ExpressVPN. I tried ProtonVPN before, but it didn't work nearly as well.

Wired - no vpn - 950Mbps up/down (google fiber)
Wired - VPN - 555 up/800down (single test) - In browsing around, I really can't tell a difference. Sometimes a request gets hung up a little bit more. For, uh, file transfers, things do seem slower, but I can still get about 100 Mbps

What does a VPN allow you to do? I know it's encrypting everything, but from a 'use' perspective. For instance, when you connect to work, what does it give you access to, and how? Reason I'm asking is, I have a NAS device that I want to be able to access while on the road. Ideally, I'd have access to it as a mapped drive, just like I do when at home.
