Apple's really not out to screw people, no really.
The Electronic Frontier Foundation and hackers everywhere scored a victory this week when the Library of Congress's Copyright Office
ruled that users can legally jailbreak their phones -- particularly Apple's iPhone.
...
"Apple's goal has always been to insure that our customers have a great experience with their iPhone and we know that jailbreaking can severely degrade the experience," Apple said in a statement provided to Cult of Mac. "As we've said before, the vast majority of customers do not jailbreak their iPhones as this can violate the warranty and can cause the iPhone to become unstable and not work reliably."

By the by, Cult of Mac is an actual website, not a derogatory term. I guess Apple equates "experience" with "absolute, total, god-like control of the gadget you just shelled out three hundred bucks for." Fuck you, Steve Jobs. Fuck you up the ass sideways with an XBox 360 dipped in ebola.

That articles a bit misleading. The ruling only said that jailbreaking and similar activities is not a violation of copyright. It was also mentioned that jailbreaking might be a violation of the DMCA or state contractual laws, but that those issues would be for someone else besides the Copyright Office to decide.

Apple hasn't lost yet, they just didn't get the super-easy win they wanted.

I had to purchase both an iPhone (I got the 3GS model, not the 4) and an iPad last week for work. Believe it or not, it came on the recommendation of Cisco.

See, we're most likely going to get a Cisco VoIP solution next year and Cisco claims that the iPhone works best with their VoIP software. They actually claim a lot of their features aren't supported by RIM (Blackberry) at all.

Very interesting. I'd also be surprised if RIM isn't working on an iPhone competitor.

As for the iPad, Cisco has the Cius coming out in Sept/Oct that is going to be a competitor only it's business oriented, not consumer oriented.

So all that being said, who else has one of these devices?

Do I really need to buy an app to open pdfs and Office documents? Which ones are the best? How do I get my old ringtones, pictures, and videos that were on my old SimCard to show up on my iPhone? I can get them on my PC obviously, but I can't find where they'd be on the iPhone. For example, I go into pictures and there's nothing there, however for contacts I had pictures of, they still show up...?

So far, I don't either.

It really is a huge iPhone without the phone. Or a really shitty laptop.

Still, it's a gimmicky product and I could see it serving a purpose. For example, I might be going to Washington in September and I'd rather have that on the flight than a laptop.

However, if I need it to do business, I'd rather have a laptop.

Apple will hate to hear this, but if they really want to dominate the market, especially in cell phones, they need to go to Microsoft and develop a product together. Apple's polish plus the MS logo (meaning all MS documents and programs work on it) would capture the business world's attention. Once you have that market, those consumers use the item at work, and then buy one for their home.

So far, I'm enjoying the iPhone far more than the iPad, but the iPhone has a lot of negatives too.

I'm happy with my iPod, which also matches this description. But it also fits in my pocket.

Why did Cisco recommend the ipad?

They didn't. They were pushing their Cius, which is the business version of the iPad. While discussing the mobility of that device, it made my CFO think we should give the iPad a try to see if the mobility is going to be a selling point for us.

Long story short: Nope.

The Cius is going to be a weird device on it's own. Think of an iPad only a touch smaller, with a docking station, and more network functionality. Again, their theory being that this is the future of workplaces and it will replace desktops.

While I'm sure desktops will eventually fade away, I think it'll be in a different form than the iPad or Cius.

And how does the iphone work with Cisco's VOIP?

Apparently there are apps developed for it that help it act exactly like a VoIP phone. If you've worked with VoIP systems, then you know about softphones. Well, Cisco says Blackberries won't work because they don't have dual channels like iPhones or something to that affect.

Essentially, one of the key things it boiled down to was our sales reps having decades old phone numbers. If we go VoIP and begin using the features for them like "follow me", softphones, etc. then we need that dual channel thing so that their old numbers will still work with the system. Without that dual channel, it's either they work off their established cell number and get none of the savings and features of VoIP or they work off VoIP and never receive calls made to their established number.

At least that's how it was explained to us. Considering we deal with a lot of farmers, and folks many would call "Good Ol' Boys" (and I do NOT mean that in a racist way), keeping those old traditional numbers is vital. Many of our customers only call once a year or once every few years. They're also not technologically savvy, so switching numbers out can be a lot tougher than you'd think.

Let me add that the Cisco guy did say the Droid would be capable of it as well, but not as smoothly as the iPhone. The iPhone is easier to program because they only deal with one technology (AT&T). It's the same way programmers talk about how easy it is to program for one platform (say the PC) rather than the same product for multiple platforms (PC, X-BOX, PS, etc.).

Using the iPhone and iPad has done nothing but reinforce my belief that Apple sucks and their fans are cultists.

iTunes is a massive steaming pile of shit.

Intuitive my ass.

And wow, does that Apple store SUCK.

I like the iPhone. I think it was a great new device for phones, and really showed what could be done. Consider what a giant piece of shit Windows Mobile phones were (still are) when the iPhone was introduced. Android didn't even exist as a phone OS. Blackberry was still focusing on email. I hate iTunes. And I don't like Apple, or Jobs. But I think the iPhone was a great device for the time, and still is.

The iPad is useful to people who do nothing more than light web surfing, and watching YouTube.

My old 512MB one is getting old, but I couldnt use one without buttons cuz I jog. And the ear controls are awful, and earbuds dont stick in my ear.
