So, we've got microprojectors now, and good quality motion sensing. Someone should put those together.
Remember the light gun for Duck Hunt? So, something like that, except it's got a microprojector in the barrel. And motion sensing capabilities. Tie this to an FPS video game, and you've got good quality portable VR. The projector displays your screen, and the device acts like your mouse by sensing what direction you are pointing with it. The center of the display in front of you is your crosshairs, so wherever you are pointing is what you are seeing and where you shoot. Tack on a little secondary device for your other hand with movement controls and you're good to go.
Of course this would be best played in a round room to avoid angled projections making things look funny.
Device Idea
I've read papers on prototypes for projectors whose job it was to follow a clipboard-like surface in a person's hand while they were walking around during a presentation, essentially giving you a high-resolution, digital, intelligent notepad at your disposal.
They all fell woefully short of expectations. The motion sensors always got confused too easily.
