Million dolalr idea (that you'd need about $50million to initiate):
Attended car charging parks. Like "full service" gas stations we used to have, that New Jersey still has.
A car charging lot near urban areas with 20-40 spots, attended by a human. They can take a car off a charger when it's done, and put a new one on. Make sure no lifted trucks park in the charging spots just to be assholes. If there's a problem with the charger, they can put the car on another. No worries about getting there and the charger is broken and/or doesn't take cash. The attendant can swipe a card..... or take actual paper money, which I think a lot of people would still prefer.
Peeps can go into wherever, park, not worry about having a charging spot, spend a couple hours at dinner/shopping/movie/work/whatever, and be sure they're going to come back to a charged car on which the charger didn't error out 5 minutes after you walked away.
Concierge charging.
I'd pay a few extra $ for that kind of peace of mind.

That really is fucking harsh.
But I'd buy one tomorrow if he'd come in and buy my company.

Do we have a driverless car thread?
This is funny and interesting. I never really thought about what happens if one of these gets pulled over. Now I know.

Consider these questions just a "check in". I'm curious to see where we've come with EVs:TheCatt wrote: ↑Thu Jul 11, 2024 6:37 pmElectric cars are already better than gasoline cars in all of these respects. They just suck at range.Leisher wrote: ↑Thu Jul 11, 2024 4:40 pm I agree with you on that, but I'm still not sold that electric cars are the solution. Still a lot of pollution charging and building that car. Still the long term issue with the batteries (although, I know they're working on recycling them). I could go into the list you provided and point out issues, but I think that takes us elsewhere and away from the autos. I want to stick with cars.
What was done with the battery disposal issues?
Have they altered something so that batteries dying don't equate to just buying a new car as that's more economically feasible? (Example: The CA dude who blew up his, I think 3-4 year old, EV because it was cheaper to just buy a new one.
EV issues are no longer financially devastating? This is the couple hundred dollars versus thousands of dollars in repairs argument. BTW, "lifetime" means nothing in this discussion. People can afford a pump going out costing them $400, but can people afford a $15-$20k repair at any moment.
The infrastructure has been installed everywhere to make them better options? I know Tesla is working on this, but is anyone else making any sort of real effort?
The human rights violations at all the mines have been resolved?
I still watch the personal vehicle market with curiosity. I think we could have a fun discussion looking at where is going to end up and the inevitable tug of war between the different market forces (consumers, big oil, auto industry, climate change folks, government, etc.).

China selling the shit out of their EVs in China.
Some are blasting the U.S. saying we're falling way behind, but others are pointing out this is a government mandate and a strategic move based on oil availability for China.
