At least they are trying. I remember when I was a Nielsen rater for one week many years ago. I got this little book in the mail and was supposed to write down what I watched and when, but only if it was live TV. They stated in bold text that anything that was watched at a time other than when it was aired they didn't want to hear about it at all. Stupid.

Fuck Nielsen and their tiny, tiny minds.

They have the ability to watch ratings live via your cable boxes, but they ignore that, and want to put weight behind the mindless demographic that is on Twitter and feels the need to tweet during shows?

Fuck that.

Ok, I do honestly get it as social media is the new water cooler, but I don't see how they can nail down these numbers and demos to an exact science. And that's the problem. Neilsen has never been interested in realistic numbers.

Neilsen has never been interested in realistic numbers.

Exactly. Neilsen is all about marketing, and marketing is ultimately a liar's game. The last thing they want is realistically honest verifiable information.

Yeah... when I've been a Nielsen person, I just write down what I think people should be watching (whether I record it, don't watch it, etc) and send it in. I can't be bothered to record what I actually did. Same thing for radio.
