Massive spoilers in this article.

The MSM is sort of burying the fact that this isn't "the" Peter Parker. I should say that they're not explaining it very clearly.

There's the Marvel Universe with all the folks you see in the films, and then there's a new Ultimate Universe that was conceived years ago. This Ultimate universe contains the same characters, but they all have new outfits and back stories. They might not be completely new, but something about each character has been tweaked.

It was an idea to bring in new readers without making them learn years of continuity. Only a few of the Ultimate books come out on a regular basis, and pretty much everything is a "huge" story. In fact, aside from Spiderman I can't think of another Ultimate title that runs monthly. I think X-Men used to, but they've pretty much killed the whole team. Seriously. In this new universe, a LOT of the characters the mainstream knows are dead, including the two biggest characters Marvel has: Wolverine and Spider-Man (Peter Parker).

That little nugget of info might be why they're rebooting the Ultimate universe soon. Not sure what that reboot will entail though since there's a new Spider-Man ongoing that is launching from this "Death of" story.

FYI: The movies are a mix of both universes. Mostly, the normal universe, but with elements of the Ultimate one mixed in to make things interesting.

They're rebooting the spin-off universe? If I ever find the dude that authorizes these ongoing attempts at squeezing more story out of the same goddamned characters, I will punch him in the nuts.

The new (Ultimate universe) Spider-Man. (Link is fixed.)

I love how Marvel always spoils their stories with a press release the day before the issue actually hits shelves.

Anyway, the big news here is that he's black AND Hispanic. Considering the majority of characters in Marvel and DC's lineup are white, it makes sense to diversify. Although, it comes off as a desperate attempt when you shove two ethnicities together like that. Justifiable though, as the writer has 1 or 2 black daughters (adopted), and the artist is Hispanic).

Now they just need to give him a sex change operation and make him/her a single mother as well and they'll have the full range.

Maybe also make him/her a Katrina survivor for good measure.

EDIT: I think you posted the wrong link, though, that's to the picture in the LJ thread.

You can always add in some weird-ass offbeat religion and make them gay, too.
