Brought to you by somebody who worked on Superbad. Seriously, that's on the box cover. I think it's the director.
Ryan Reynolds is on the box cover, but he's not the star. He does play a pivotal character and is in the movie throughout, but I'm guessing this was as a favor to a friend or something along those lines.
Anyway, this is set in the 80s judging by the cars, music, hair styles, and clothes. The main character wants to head to Europe after graduating high school, but events land him at a job in Adventureland instead. There he meets a girl, makes new friends, and parties a lot.
This is NOT a comedy. There are some mild chuckles, but the themes here are very adult (lots of drug use, drinking, infidelity, aging, death, second marriages, etc.). Although, the drug use and drinking is both over the top and a bit disturbing based on when the characters are high/drunk. (IE: Let's hope it doesn't get emulated.)
There's pretty good acting throughout, particularly from Kristen Stewart who is pretty hot and easily the most troubled character. Nobody in the cast sucks, although a few are helped by a solid script.
There are some flaws to the film such as slow pacing, a few characters who were interesting, but got little attention, etc.
In no way is this a feel good movie, so I'd recommend you be in the mood to watch something like this before renting it. I'd also recommend watching a comedy immediately after it.
Despite the minor flaws, this was a well made, and well acted film.
8 out of 10.
