Most likely explanation I've seen so far:
It's a promo for a sci-fi film, District 9, due out next August. Judging by the info on the sites, the film is a feature-length version of the director's short Alive in Joburg.

Seems preachy.

It reminds me of...Alien Nation? (Am I right about the name? It was also a TV show.)

Yeah, I think that's the one. Never got into it. Looked boring.

The whole movie was good... but the last hour or so are simply fantastic...

Deep down though, it's a social satire... but it disguises itself as a great sci-fi movie.

Also, to add...

Don't go into this movie expecting things to "logically make sense"

A lot of shit doesn't really make sense... but it's still a good time.

They attempt to transplant a heart from <s>a Terminator</s> an alien into a human?

Does it matter that I haven't seen Districts 1-8? Will I have trouble following this movie?

Yeah, before you go see it you should rent/buy the first 8 DVDs.

Actually, I have the first 8 in my DVD collection... if you just PayPal me a fair price I could sent it right over.

I might have to play hooky one day to see this.

Oh, and Gordo, this movie and "Inglorious Bastards" were the movies coming up that I'd see in a theater.

We should go out on a date and have a double feature.

It was a lot darker than I thought it would be. And heavy on the allegory.

How did it compare to Alien Nation?

Darker.

And more allegorical?

I would say equally as allegorical.

Dwelling, I would call this one a must-see.

"When dealing with aliens, try to be polite, but firm. And always remember that a smile is cheaper than a bullet."

For the first 30 or so minutes, this movie is completely different from what you'll be expecting. After that it picks up dramatically.

I really enjoyed this film. I'd say this is a must see for Sci-Fi fans.

8 out of 10.
