(I'm not going to rehash details of the series, so search for my previous reviews of the first and second seasons if anything here throws you.)

An 8 episode season of Eureka that was actually pretty eventful.

I assume that Eureka's status was up in the air at this point resulting in the very short season, but I also know that it came back for Season 3.5 and has been renewed for another 22 episode season beginning this summer.

Thus, I chalk this up to another example of the SyFy Network not knowing what the hell they're doing. (These are the folks who aired reruns of Firefly instead of just picking the show up.)

Anyway, this season isn't as strong as Seasons 1 and 2, mainly because the underlying storyline isn't all that interesting, but it does have a major event that occurs out of nowhere. I don't want to say more to avoid spoiling anything.

The main storyline this year involves a woman who shows up in Eureka looking at their budget, but we find out immediately that she is also there searching for something. Initially, this starts off interesting, but it builds soooooo slowly that you lose interest fast. The actress portraying the woman also phones it in half the time, so that rips out a lot of the immersion for viewers.

There's also a new addition to the cast as the sheriff's hippie sister comes to town.

According to rumors, this could be a preemptive move to replace another character. I won't say who, but it should be obvious. And here's where SyFy fails as a network again, apparently, nobody is signed onto this show long term. One of the main characters was switched after the pilot, another left the show at the end of season 2 (and her storyline didn't seem to resolve itself...), one was on the short lived "Hank" which was on ABC earlier this year, another is on The Good Wife, another was doing a show about modeling, another has shot multiple pilots for other shows, etc.

Hey SyFy, to make a show successful, you need to have characters people invest in and care about. That means you need to lock them up so they don't bolt for higher paying shows and more exposure.

Back to Eureka, this is still an excellent diversion with a very likable cast. Season 3.0 might be shorten, but it's still worth a purchase...just don't pay top dollar.
