Privileged white kid hates his parents for not being perfect, and strikes out on his own, never says goodbye to anyone, abandons his sister who loves him, tramps across America and into Alaska, and there's even a scene where he burns his money. I'm pretty sure he is supposed to be seen as a "good guy" with insight.
This movie was a colossal waste of time.

The book portrays him more as ignorant, but youthfully optimistic/hopeful kid who is nice, good to others, etc, but lost.

Yeah, I took away from the book that he was misguided and not all there upstairs.

He was an idiot. About three rungs below the Grizzly Man in terms of stupid, but well within sight.
Yeah, people have a great big hole in the middle of them and they try to fill it with "stuff", or drugs or booze or sex. It's called the human condition, you douche.
I think what bothers me more are all the people that think he was some sort of brave visionary.

What makes him a douche is that he thought he had all the answers. I was glad the movie ended the way it did. I kept thinking, "You know.... real hunger really makes you sort out your priorities.... will this kid figure it out?"
