This is the least science-fictiony sci-fi I've ever read.
I heard it was about a father and son journeying from point A to point B in a post-apocalyptic America. And it was. But it didn't need to be a post-apocalyptic anything. It was just desolate terrain sprinkled with cannibalistic assholes. The story was about the father trying to shield his young son from the horror they lived in.
It was well written... McCarthy has a style unique in what I've experienced. Very spare style. He makes Hemingway look like Faulkner. I don't think there was a single quotation mark used in the entire book. Conversations went thus:
You hungry?
Yeah.
We should eat.
No.
You sure?
No.
Okay.
Okay.
No joke.
Descriptive passages were like this:
The rain swept the side of the building. Rivulets streaming into the gutters. Air smelling of wet ash.
Not exact passages, but that's exactly the style.
Final verdict..... if you don't mind stories where they are eating babies, and like human stories set in a sci-fi setting, give it a shot.
