A white guy playing a black guy? How fucking racist and insenative.

So is this supposed to be a comedy?

No. It's deadly serious.

I didn't know it was ok to have fun with the Vietnam war yet. I don't really know much about the movie, but it made me uncomfortable.

Looks like it isn't a spoof about Vietnam, it's a spoof about a bunch of actors making a Vietnam movie.
Ben Stiller says "Tropic Thunder" is a "a comedy about five actors who go on location and find themselves relying on their boot camp experiences when they get stuck in a real war-like situation." Black will play Jeff "Fats" Portnoy, an overweight gross-out comedian, who's forced to kick his drug addiction while filming on location in the jungle. Downey Jr. will play Kirk Lazarus, the greatest actor of his generation and a four-time Oscar winner. Baruchel will play Kevin Sandusky, an unknown actor on the set and Stiller plays Speedman.

Saw the movie tonight.

It tried really hard to have that absurd funniness that is Stiller's trademark, but in the middle of it, and almost simultaneously, it tried to have moments of serious gravity. I'm not sure if that combination mixes well.

Not much of a movie buff, haven't been to a theater in about 10 years, but I saw one of the actors on the today show. Lots and lots of controversy surround this film. I believe he said the producers organization tried to stop the distribution.

Yeah, the word "retard" gets bandied about quite a bit.

This is another movie that was marketed very, very poorly. I realize it had a huge marketing campaign, but they were marketing the wrong movie to the wrong people.

I definitely did not see the film I was expecting based on the marketing I saw.

This movie was a brilliant 2 hour long Hollywood inside joke.

Think of an actor and you'd most likely see him in one of the main characters as they all seem to be amalgams. (And damn, someone does NOT like Eddie Murphy!)

Does everyone know that Tom Cruise's (entertaining, but overrated performance) character actually looks like the producer of Tropic Thunder?

I could talk at length about the symbolism within this film and who represented who, etc., but just go see the movie for yourself. I will say that I thought the "bad guys" were the American public.

Robert Downey should win an award for his role. I kept forgetting he was white.

8.5 out of 10.

Good stuff. Story is a bit weak, but this isn't about story, it's about biting self-satire and some damn fine acting. And some well-done intentionally bad acting.

I didn't even realize it was Tom <s>Hanks</s> Cruise until the last few minutes of the movie.

This movie was awesome. The first half was definitely better than the story part of it, imho. but still solid.

*edit - yeah, that psycho*

This was pretty good. I loved it when Stiller threw the baby off his back and the fake trailers in the beginning was a cool way to show back story.
