Caught the first half of this before I took off for work yesterday. Will Gibson worked on the screenplay, I recalled. After reading Neuromancer a couple times in Scotland & comparing it to his later works ("Pattern Recognition" in particular), I've come to the conclusion that this may not be a good thing. Will has a tendency to write half a book which seems to be getting only more prevalent over the last decade or so. All the shittiness of this film came back in full force. Keanu's clueless, deadpan acting, the numerous changes from the short story (killing things that made the short story cool), the shallow, watered-down, pale shadow of a character Jane (supposed to be Molly), the fucking spin they put on the dolphin & the dudes helping Johnny & Jane fight the Yak, all of it. All of it was just fucking bad.
Comic books & graphics novels are the things now. Plenty CGI driven, sharp, & some even well done. Isn't it about time someone took one of Neal Stephenson's or William Gibson's better books & did it up right & proper? Seriously, what hacker/cyber/computer flicks are even worth remembering? Hackers, Sneakers, Wargames? Can anyone think of one made in the past five years?
