I REALLY wanted to love this film as a big "FU" to Hollywood, but to be honest, there just wasn't enough of Donner's work to considerably change the movie.
For every piece of crap we saw in the original, Donner brought something shitty to the party as well.
One other thing I really noticed is that this movie didn't age well, nor did it have good science behind it. Plus, it shit on the comic's history and facts. The moon scene and the finale are still brutal to watch for their lack of respect to science and the source material. It's also funny to watch the fight scenes as you could tell the film makers had no idea how to translate these people's powers onto the screen.
Here come the spoilers:
-Instead of a bomb on the Eiffel Tower, one of the missles Superman redirected from Part 1 is what shatters the prison Zod and his crew are held in. No word on how it traveled millions of miles away from Earth.
-Mostly, the additions are dialogue between Superman and dad or Superman and Lois. Nothing special. A few additional fight moments have been added in as well.
-The new ending will make you groan as loudly as the last one. It also does NOT make you think that Richard Donner is very creative.
I can only recommend this to monster Superman fans or fans of film making. Supes fans "have" to see it just to see it right? Although, I worry that they'll realize Superman II is not as good as they remember and is tremendously overrated. Film making fans should enjoy this as a "How to fuck up an established character" educational experience.
