It is not sufficient to say, "There's nothing you can do to prevent someone, even someone who is mentally ill, from getting a gun if they want it." Something can be done if we try hard enough.
There is nothing you can do to prevent someone, even someone who is mentally ill, from seeing that the premise of their argument is based on flawed hope.

I've begun on other forums to say, when someone says, "The NRA will not let this discussion happen,"

What if, the next time some jackass talked about how the second amendment is useless because you can't fight the government with deer rifle, a pro-gun person replied:
Dumbass, they don't need to shoot the government. They just need to shoot YOU. You, who posted on Facebook about how you hate guns and would never own one. You, who also posted on Facebook your name, pics of you and your kids, the place where you work, the places you like to go for dinner, the venues you're at on the weekend.
That would be terrible, wouldn't it? I wouldn't condone that.

Mercer then purportedly expresses skepticism that anything could have turned his life around: "He asks, 'What was supposed to happen? What great event was supposed to make me realize I had so much going for me?' " the source says.
Abandoned and alone, Mercer allegedly writes, "I've been forced to align myself with these demons and become one of them. At first, it was involuntary, but now I am aligned with them. I now serve. When I die I will become one of them."
