The Internet needs to collectively stop sucking Neil deGrasse Tyson's dick. And add bacon and zombies to that list. I love bacon, but fuck you for ruining it, everyone. Holy shit, just shut the fuck up about bacon. Yeah, it's great, we know. Bacon cups, bacon salt, bacon shirts, bacon gum, bacon, bacon, bacon, WE GET IT. NdGT deserves some love, imo. He did a great job launching the new Cosmos series. I think Sagan would have approved.

I'm sure he's a nice dude, and does his best. And props to him for being a celebrity; I'm not a hater. I just don't think I've ever heard of any actual scientific contributions he's made.
I've found that people who make important contributions to science also make several important contributions. Example: Einstein. If he'd done nothing but Relativity, that would still be beyond the ken of most mortals. But he didn't even win a Nobel for that; he won the Nobel for his work in photoelectricty. He also made a contribution to mathematical notation.
Take another guy: Richard Hamming, who along with Claude Shannon pretty much invented Information Theory. There's, like, a half dozen concepts named after him.
Neil deGrasse Tyson, on the other hand...what "science" has he actually done? NB: the man has a PhD from an Ivy; I will concede he had to do SOMETHING to earn that, and I respect that. He's probably smarter than me, I will also concede that.
But he's a cheerleader.

Let's be honest, what makes him stand out most isn't his work, but rather his being an African American in a field where there just aren't many. He's good in his field, but most importantly he's a good black man in his field.

I disagree. Oh, sure, that's undoubtedly a part of his notoriety, but I can't think of a single white guy with as much Carl-Sagan-style talking-astronomy-to-the-pleebs cred in the US currently. All because it's a dancing bear doesn't mean it can't still be a good dancer.
I just don't think I've ever heard of any actual scientific contributions he's made.
This is a valid point with which I must agree. No doubt there's been some, but nothing important enough to become common knowledge.

His basic message is: Space is amazing! You people are just too dumb to know it.
The bacteria on most kitchen counters are amazing in some way, too. So are the depths of the ocean.
Let's be honest, what makes him stand out most isn't his work, but rather his being an African American in a field where there just aren't many. He's good in his field, but most importantly he's a good black man in his field.
Bah. No way. Stephen Hawking is a legit scientist with notoriety. He also happens to have one of the most recognizable voices in the world and he's wheelchair bound, but even if you take that away, he's still done some noteworthy things.
Neil can be a charismatic, if condescending, mofo. He's not brain dead. That's where the fame comes from. Most physicists aren't exactly dudes who can host a TV series and not bore the audience to death. None of that has to do with his skin. For every 1 presentable university expert/professor/researcher on National Geographic, Discovery, or the Science Channel, there are 100 trolls (in every sense of the world).

I haven't said that either of these guys weren't accomplished. But Hawking is another one. Is he were upright and walking around most people wouldn't know who he is. Compare how many cultural references there are to him and how many of those rely on his being in a wheel chair or his electric voice.
Tiger Woods is an incredible golfer (or was... not sure how he's doing now days). If he were white, he'd more than likely still be worth millions. Just not the estimated $500 million.

There are no shortage of people exaggerating or whatever to make a point or sell a story. His are not particularly egregious. I don't doubt he made them up, but I don't really care that much. That's like half the people in the world.

Well I don't really car about him one way or another, but when he specifically calls someone out for saying something, like he did with George Bush, he should be able to back it up.

I guess if a scientist is going to ignore something like provable facts, then that does bother me a bit. Kind of like listening to a stock market analyst that continuously loses money on the market. Being able to make money on the market is kind of their job. Dealing with facts is kind of the job of a scientist.

My wife and I were looking at new shows to watch tonight, and Cosmos was in the list.
Her: OMG, I tried to watch 5 minutes of that with your parents once when they were visiting. He immediately started talking down to the audience. It was like the level of [a kid's planetarium show we went to]. Your dad hated him too.
