Just helped my kid with a little "Ohio History" homework. Section on Ohio's contributions in WW2. The word "Hitler" is never mentioned in 2 pages, which I found odd.
The workbook question was, "What 3 things ended WW2." I said, "The 3rd thing is Hitler's death in Germany..." kid says... "The book doesn't mention Hitler." I checked his book, it said the bomb on hiroshima and the bomb on nagasaki, and ended there (an Ohioan was flying the Enola Gay, fyi). No 3rd thing stated in the text.
So.
What?

"What 3 things ended WW2."
1) Hitler being one of the worst military strategists in the history of the world. In particular, insisting on taking a personal hand in battle plans towards the end of the war because of rampant paranoia, and being fucking stupid enough to launch a two-front war, the second being opened when he voluntarily pissed off Russia. That's why the Allies stopped trying to assassinate him after a bit. If they took him out, the Nazis might have put someone competent in charge.
2) The US having the resources and brains to build the bomb. Otherwise the Japanese are too stubborn to surrender.
3) The sheer number of Russians.

Malcolm is correct on 2 and 3. For #1, I'd add: Hitler shipping Rommel off to North Africa. It was game over when that happened.
That's like sitting Joe Montana in the Super Bowl and putting Ryan Leaf into the game.

Erwin did a wonderful job getting on the wrong side of the Nazi brass. A number of them thought they were fighting WWI 2.0 instead of WWII.

Can't mention Hitler unless comparing conservatives to him. Otherwise it might make people feel bad.

And, of course, completely ignoring the fact that his policies and beliefs align far more closely to the political left.

That goes back to making people feel bad.

You should see how angry they get when you point out the National Socialists were nationalist and socialist. They have all kinds of reasons why it wasn't.
