Was watching V for Vendetta while eating lunch today, and watching the distopic future in England made a random thought pop into my head:

The best lie the Progressive movement ever told that was actually accepted as given by the majority of the people is that a Conservative movement, believing in limited government, could lead to a fascist government and society.

Fascist societies are liberal policies writ large, but for some reason when people think of nazies or hitler or racists they always think "conservatives."

Well played, hippies.

Hitler!

Actually, it's like this:

Conservative = Opposes Welfare = Hates Negroes = Racist = Hitler!

Also:

Conservative = Opposes Abortion = Hates Women = something something = Hitler!

Real Liberalism doesn't lead to fascism any more than real Conservatism does. Either one will get you there if they are twisted completely out of shape so that they are a mockery of themselves. For fascist Liberalism that would be the same sort of thinking that starts with "political correctness". For fascist Conservatism, it would be the sort that starts with "Homeland Security".

Conservatives didn't form Homeland security, republicans and democrats did.

Explain to me how a movement for limited government ends up with total government control.

That's what I mean by being twisted into a mockery of itself. There are no real Conservatives left in the Republican party any more than there are any real Liberals left in the Democratic party.

But the basis behind Homeland Security is that of those who call themselves Conservatives and push agendas ranging from trying to get Creationism taught in public schools to forming militias to patrol the border with Mexico to threatening to boycott Lowe's because they advertised on a TV program that dared to portray an average Muslim family without showing them as obsessed with blowing everything up.

Real Conservatism would never lead to fascism. That's my point. But then neither would real Liberalism. We don't have either of those now, we have different flavors of Authoritarianism.
