Somewhere i have about 6,000 Magic: The Gathering cards laying around the house just gathering dust. But i have nobody to play with nor do i have the patience or desire to dig through all of those just to make a deck. Now i don't have to!
Hearthstone is a collectable card game that plays and feels much like M:TG, but plays alot faster. I own one of the PC versions of M:TG and its ok, you can't play against other people, only AI. Kinda stupid when it comes to a game like this. This game seems to do it right.
If you are familiar with M:TG then this game will be super easy to learn. If not, its still easy to learn but you may not have the board control concept down and may not know the most effiecient way to spend your mana each turn.
First thing you do is pick a Hero that you wanna play with. There are quite a few like Mage, Hunter, Palidin, Druid ect.. Each of these have thier own abilities they bring to the table. You only start with one and you have to unlock the others by playing against the AI (i think). You start with 2-3 cards and one mana crystal. Each round you draw a card and gain a new mana crystal. There are no separate land cards so you don't have to decide what colors to play with or be screwed because you didnt draw a mana card. As each turn goes you lay down your creatures and make your attacks. You can do this with either the creatures that are on the board or with direct damage cards (like fireball). Your Hero can actually do many different things too so this brings a new twist to the M:TG classic game style. They even have special cards that are accociated with them so each deck will have its own feel and gameplay. You keep going round by round doing this untill one of you are dead. Pretty simple and pretty fun.
One big difference from M:TG is that you can only cast card spells on your turn, so there are no instants or interrupts. But you don't feel like its cheap because so many of the creature cards have abilities attached to them that trigger when they are supposed to. But everything that you would want in a CCG is there. You gain gold from playing and can use that to buy new packs of cards. With these packs you can build your own decks to your hearts desire. Each deck consists of 30 cards, no more, no less. With a max of 2 of the same card in any given deck. This is good because you don't have to put land cards in there and it keeps the games going pretty fast.
I have only played through the begging of the game where you are given a hero and play against AI to get you familiar with the game. But i can see that there are PvP games and a ranking system of some sort. There is even some kind of tournement system you can get into. I don't know much about the ranking and tourney stuff yet, but i know its there.
Very fun game that is made by Blizzard so its funded really well. Yes there are microtransactions, but from what i have learned they made sure it wasn't a pay to win type game cause that would just break a game like this. Its been in closed beta for many months now and it just came to open beta, but its free!! So if anyone is interested in a game like this i suggest to download it. Games go really fast maybe 5-10 mins so its a good time killer while waiting for others.
