A little orphan girl from Kentucky learns to play chess from the janitor of the orphanage. And also get addicted to the tranquilizers they feed the kids. But she's really, super good at chess.

First episode was really good.

My wife watched all 7 episodes and wants me to watch it really badly. She wants to re-watch it with me.

I'll probably start tomorrow night. (Football tonight.)

Episode 2 spoiler discussion after this point.

So just watched it.

I really like stories about strong women, who refuse to be victims. She has to ask questions in new situations, but it never even occurs to this chick to be a victim, in spite of the challenges in her life. I dig it.

Interesting message regarding the tranquilizers, though. The show is almost suggesting that a girl needs to suppress her emotions and play like a man, if she wants to succeed. The drugs are definitely a crutch, but I don't know what kind of crutch, yet. We will see.

Just watched ep 4. I admire the storytelling. It's managing to remain gripping, but there's no real antagonist. I'm so accustomed to "the whole world wants to hurt the girl" stories that.... this just feels refreshing. Everyone is civilized, everyone is polite, everyone shakes hands even when they lose the game. "There's more to life than chess."

It stayed solid to.the end. Just great storytelling. Simple, not million side threads to make the viewer equate "confusing" with "interesting."

I have a speculation about what happens next in the story, but I'll save it until everyone has seen.
